Georg Hackl (born September 9, 1966 in Berchtesgaden ), known as Hackl Schorsch , is a former German luge and sports soldier with the rank of sergeant major . His greatest sporting successes include three Olympic gold medals and two silver medals in the single-seater, which he achieved in six participations in a row from 1988 to 2006 .

School and education

Hackl attended the CJD Christophorus Schools in Berchtesgaden . He came to tobogganing through school, where he also became a German student champion. After school he successfully trained as a locksmith .

After completing his active sports career, Hackl completed a three-year training course as a qualified trainer at the Cologne Trainer Academy , which he completed in April 2009 as the best of his class with a grade of 1.1.

Sledding

Hackl was one of the world's most successful luge athletes, who achieved victories on all the well-known toboggan runs and for over 18 years was always at the forefront of tobogganing. He was known as a tinkerer who devoted himself to optimizing his sled in every free minute .

Hackl's career began in 1987 by winning the German Championship, which he has won 16 times over the years. In the following year he was able to win the European Championships and also won the silver medal at the Olympic Winter Games in Calgary behind Jens Müller ( GDR ).

In 1989 he became world champion for the first time and won the overall World Cup. He even surpassed this success in the following year, when he won the European Championships in addition to the World Cup and World Cup.

Hackl won the gold medal for the first time at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville . The next year he became vice world champion and won as a member of the German team World Cup team gold, which he was able to repeat in 1995 after winning gold again in the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer .

After another runner-up in 1996, he became world champion again in 1997, just a hundred days after a spinal disc operation. He also won gold again at the 1998 Olympic Games .

After a fall in a competition, Hackl suffered a defeat at the World Cup in 1999 on his home track in Königssee . After winning the World Cup and European Championship team gold in 2000, he was runner-up again in 2001 and won team gold again.

At the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City , he won silver behind one of his greatest competitors, the Italian Armin Zöggeler , and thus his fifth Olympic medal. In the same year he was awarded the Bavarian Sports Prize in the "Ambassador of Bavarian Sports" category.

In 2003 Hackl only finished 16th in the individual ranking at the World Cup, but then won gold again with the team. In 2004 and 2005 he again won the runner-up in the individual competition, which was again accompanied by team gold in 2005.

The end of his career was in sight when he had to undergo another operation on his intervertebral disc in 2005. In January 2006, severe flu caused him to lose 4 kg in weight and spend five days in hospital while preparing for the Olympics.

A nerve inflammation in his left arm led to bad start times at the 2006 Winter Games in Turin and robbed him of hope for bronze. Hackl finished 7th in his last individual race and was thus without a medal in the last competition of his sports career. One year after his resignation, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf , the highest German sports award.

During his active time, Hackl was a sports soldier in the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr in Bischofswiesen , most recently in the rank of sergeant major . His current job as a technical trainer at the bobsleigh and sledge association for Germany enables him to pass on his experience to German luge athletes.

Hackl was inducted into the FIL Hall of Fame in 2012.

Despite the many victories, he only won the overall World Cup twice. At the same time, Markus Prock drove , who was overall winner ten times.
