Josef Fendt (born October 6, 1947 in Berchtesgaden ) is a former German luge athlete and has been president of the international luge association, Fédération Internationale de Luge de Course, since 1994 .

Josef Fendt, who started for RC Berchtesgaden , was one of the most successful luge riders of the 1970s. He was world champion in the single seater in 1970 and 1974, where he was able to use the home advantage on the artificial ice rink at Königssee . At the 1976 Olympic Games in Innsbruck , after finishing sixth in 1972 in Sapporo , he won the silver medal behind Dettlef Günther .

For this success he received the silver bay leaf.

In 1971, 1972, 1974 and 1975 he was German champion. At the 1973 European Luge Championships , again in Königssee, he came second. His sister Andrea Fendt was also successful in luge sport.

After the end of his sporting career, Fendt began to work as a functionary in the international luge association Fédération Internationale de Luge de Course . In 1985 he was elected vice-president of the association responsible for sports on artificial ice rinks. After the death of association president Bert Isatitsch in February 1994, Fendt initially took over his official duties on a provisional basis. On June 25, 1994, he was elected President of the Luge Federation at the 43rd FIL Congress in Rome, which he still holds today.

On the occasion of his 61st birthday, Fendt was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon in 2008 .
