Felix Loch (born July 24, 1989 in Sonneberg ) is a German luge athlete . In his career so far in the single-seater and with the team, he has won three Olympic gold medals , 13 world championship titles , five European championship titles and six times the overall World Cup .

Background and career

Felix Loch, son of the German national toboggan trainer Norbert Loch , starts for the RC Berchtesgaden and lives in Schönau am Königssee . Loch proved his talent early on. In 2002 he reached second place in the German championships in the age group "Youth B" in the doubles. In the following year he repeated this success and was also champion in the single seater. He also won the single-seater title in 2004 and 2005 as an A-youth. In the 2004/05 season he was second in the overall A-Juniors World Cup.

2005/06 season In the 2005/06 season Loch started in the Junior World Cup and won four races, finished second twice and won the overall World Cup. In 2006 he was junior world champion in the single seater and in the team in Altenberg .

2006/07 season With the resignation of Denis Geppert, he moved into the extended circle for the World Cup in the 2006/07 season. On his first appearance in Park City , he was tenth. On December 7th, 2006 he reached the sixth and so far best place in Königssee . A ninth place followed in Oberhof , and finally a seventh place in Altenberg. With this and winning the junior world championship title in individual and in a team at the end of January 2007 in Cesana , he qualified for the world championships in Innsbruck-Igls at the beginning of February . There the at that time only seventeen year old came in a good ninth place for him.

2007/08 season In the 2007/08 season he was able to steadily improve and consolidate his performance in the World Cup and qualified again for the World Championships in Oberhof. On January 26, 2008, when he was only 18 years old, he won his first world title. This makes him the youngest luge world champion to date. Shortly before that, he was sixth, second-best German starter at the 2008 European Championships in Cesana. At the Junior World Championships in Lake Placid in 2008, he finished second behind Wolfgang Kindl . In 2008, he and Natalie Geisenberger were honored with the Bavarian Sports Prize in the category “Outstanding young athletes”.

2008/09 season On October 25, 2008, Loch in Königssee was German champion 2009 in single seater. On February 7, 2009, he defended his world title in Lake Placid . Only Georg Hackl and Armin Zöggeler achieved this before him . At the World Cup in Königsee, Felix Loch was able to take third place on the podium for the first time in January 2009 . In the next World Cup in Cesana he reached second place. After four more podium places, he finished fourth in the overall World Cup.

2009/10 season On October 31, 2009 he defended his title at the German Championships . On December 5, 2009 , Loch achieved the first World Cup victory on the Altenberg track after two fourth places at the beginning of the season. Here, Loch was also part of the winning team relay and thus won his first victory in this discipline. In the course of the season, a second and third place followed and at the end of the season, the third place in the overall World Cup. The culmination of his career so far came on February 14, 2010, when Loch won the single-seater Olympic champion at the Olympic Games in Vancouver .

2010/11 The first competition of the season 2010/11 hole won in Innsbruck-Igls, plus the race in Oberhof and Altenberg. He also stood on the podium two more times. He was second in the overall World Cup at the end of the season. Felix Loch won the silver medal at the 2011 World Championships after being in the lead after the first round.

2011/12 season In the 2011/12 season , Loch won the World Cups in Innsbruck, Whistler , Königsee, Oberhof, Winterberg and Sigulda , plus a second place in Calgary . With the victory in Sigulda, he was able to secure the overall World Cup victory for the first time one race before the end of the season. At the Luge World Championships 2012 in Altenberg , Felix Loch won his third individual world championship title and his third title in a team competition. At the European Championships in Paramonowo he won the bronze medal in individual.

2012/13 season At the beginning of the 2012/13 season , Felix Loch won the World Cup opener in Innsbruck and the races in Altenberg and Oberhof. The latter was rated as the 2013 European Championship , where Loch secured the European Championship for the first time on January 13th. On the same day, he also won the title with the team relay around Natalie Geisenberger and the two-seater duo Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken . He also won both possible titles at the 2013 World Championships on the track in Whistler.

2013/14 season In the 2013/14 winter , Loch was victorious in five World Cup races and won the overall standings for the third time. At the Olympic Games in Sochi he won the gold medal again by a clear margin. On February 13, 2014, he was again Olympic champion in the team relay together with the single-seater driver Natalie Geisenberger and the two-seater drivers Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt . At the closing ceremony, Loch had the honor of carrying the German flag into the Olympic Stadium. For these achievements, he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on May 8, 2014 by Federal President Joachim Gauck .

2014/15 season He was able to make the start of the season successful and won both the normal men's race and the men's sprint in Innsbruck-Igls . Before the 2015 Luge World Championships , he was able to win three more individual races and drove to the World Championships in Sigulda as the World Cup leader . There he had to surrender to the Russian Semyon Pavlichenko on February 15, 2015 . In the relay competition he was able to cross the finish line as part of the German team, ahead of Russia and Canada. At the end of the season he was able to win the overall men's world cup for the fourth time in a row.

Season 2015/16 The season started rather mixed. His first victory was only on the fourth World Cup station in Calgary . After that he was able to start a strong series and was able to win seven competitions in a row. With this he laid the foundation for his fifth overall World Cup victory in a row. At the Luge World Championships in 2016 on the Königssee artificial ice rink , he was able to win all three gold medals and is therefore also the first world champion in the sprint race, which was held for the first time.

Season 2016/17

The 2016/17 season was not Felix Loch's season. He could only win one normal World Cup race and one sprint race during the season. For this reason, he did not travel to the 2017 Luge World Championships in Innsbruck as a favorite. For the first time since the 2007 World Championships, where he competed at the age of seventeen, he was without a medal. In the overall men's world cup , he finished second behind the Russian Roman Repilow .

2017/18 season In the 2017/18 winter , Loch was victorious in four World Cup races and won the overall standings for the sixth time. At the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang he led the single-seater competition until the last run, but fell back to fifth after a driving error in the fourth run. He missed the chance to catch up with his mentor Georg Hackl , who had won gold in the individual three times in a row.

2018/19 season In the 2018/19 season he kept track of his form for a long time, until the World Championship he was unable to win any race except in the relay and was only on the podium twice. At the 2019 Luge World Championships in Winterberg , he won the entire set of medals and was individual world champion for the sixth time, setting Armin Zöggeler's record . On February 2, 2019, he won his first World Cup race in Altenberg in over a year.
