Fredrik Henrik Chapman , ennobled since 1772 Fredrik Henrik af Chapman (born September 9, 1721 in Gothenburg / Sweden , † August 19, 1808 ), was a Swedish master shipbuilder. He revolutionized shipbuilding by first planning ships presented at scientific and mathematical principles.

His scientific methods included experiments on the flow resistance of various hull shapes .

Life

Chapman's parents were of British descent. His grandfather was a shipbuilder in London and his father ran a shipyard in Sweden. At 15, Chapman went to sea. He then spent several years both in Sweden and abroad learning practical and theoretical shipbuilding and studying mathematics and physics. He was temporarily detained in England on charges of espionage at the Royal Shipyard.

From 1757 to 1760 Chapman was a sub-ship builder in Karlskrona . In 1760 Chapman became a shipbuilder in Stralsund in Swedish Pomerania , where he stayed until 1762. Here he designed small and medium-sized shallow water vessels for the Swedish archipelago fleet to control the sea area between Sweden and Finland, which was then part of Sweden, which is peppered with numerous shallows .

From 1764 Chapman worked in Stockholm . During the following years he published his groundbreaking work Architectura Navalis Mercatoria , in which he published numerous detailed shipbuilding plans that were for the first time worked out on a scientific and mathematical basis.

From 1782 to 1793 he headed the shipyard in Karlskrona, and in 1791 he became vice admiral.
