Horst Hörnlein
Horst Hörnlein (born May 31, 1945 in Möhrenbach ) is a former German luge rider who competed for the GDR .
Career
In 1967 Hörnlein was disqualified at the World Championships in Hammarstrand in Sweden because he had heated the runners of his sled and thus achieved better sliding ability. In his career he was successful in both the single and double seater. In the single-seater he was European champion in 1971 and in the double-seater he won the gold medal together with Reinhard Bredow at the 1972 Olympic Games in Sapporo . He had already won the pre-Olympic competitions with Bredow on February 13, 1971 a year earlier. He was also vice world champion with Bredow in 1969, European champion in 1970 and world champion in doubles in 1973. After his career, Hörnlein became a trainer and was involved in developing bobsleigh in the GDR. Later he was commissioned by the World Bobsleigh Federation, among others, to bring the smaller bobsleigh nations closer to the top of the world. In the early 1990s, for example, he trained the British bobsleigh drivers with Sean Olsson .
Hörnlein was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in gold in 1984 and in silver in 1972 and 1988.
