geography

Möhrenbach is located in the Thuringian Forest . The municipality can be divided into three strips. In the west lies the Thuringian Forest with its mountains, in the middle the wide Möhrenbacher Tal and in the east the Lange Berg , which already belongs to the Thuringian Slate Mountains . In the western part of the municipality is the valley of the Wohlrose , above which the 771 meter high Silberberg rises. To the east follow the valleys of Möhrenbach and Ilmsenbach, which unite in Möhrenbach to form the valley water. In the central north-south valley, the village of Möhrenbach is about 550 meters above sea level. The landscape here is characterized by meadows interspersed with small forests and only rises to the east to the Long Mountain, which at 808 meters is the highest point in the municipality. In the forests in the west and east of the municipality, the spruce dominates the trees. In the extreme south of the municipality is the Hohe Tanne , the pass between Langem Berg and Thuringian Forest and the catchment areas of the Ilm and Saale . The neighboring town in the north is Gehren , in the south behind the Hohe Tanne lies Großbreitenbach and in the east beyond the Long Mountain Gillersdorf .

history

From 1533 to 1920 the place belonged to the office of Gehren in the Principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen ( suzerainty ), then until 1952 to the district of Arnstadt and from 1952 to the district of Ilmenau . In 1994 the Ilm district was founded, to which Möhrenbach belongs today.

Since 1994 Möhrenbach has belonged to the administrative community Langer Berg based in Gehren. According to the Thuringian law on the voluntary reorganization of municipalities belonging to the district, Möhrenbach was incorporated into Gehren on December 31, 2013, which raised Gehren to a rural municipality. As part of the regional reform in Thuringia , Möhrenbach has been one of 16 districts of the city of Ilmenau since July 6, 2018 .
