history

Oehrenstock was first mentioned in a document in 1311. The place was owned by the Lords of Wüllersleben and later became part of the Schwarzburg-Sondershausen county . The inhabitants were farmers, miners or forest workers. In particular, the brown stone required for the frequent glass and metal processing in the Thuringian Forest, which was extracted in several pits and which led to a certain prosperity in the village in the 19th century, was mined . Later there were also some smaller companies that produced thermometers . Until 1918 Oehrenstock belonged to the sovereignty of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. During the time of the GDR, agriculture in particular was intensified. On March 8, 1994, the place of Langewiesen was incorporated. Langewiesen was again incorporated into Ilmenau on July 6, 2018.

Wolfram Lortsch has been the local mayor since 2009. He was last confirmed in office in the local elections in Thuringia on May 26, 2019. Together with four other members, he forms the district council of Oehrenstock.
