Peter Penz (born April 5, 1984 in Hall in Tirol ) is a former Austrian luge rider .
Career
Peter Penz is a sports soldier and lives in Telfes . He has been tobogganing since 1992 and formed a two-seater luge with the man behind Georg Fischler until 2018. Both were successful in the junior division in the early 2000s, including winning gold at the Junior World Championships in Calgary . They have been competing in the Luge World Cup together since the 2004/05 season . They finished the season 17th in the overall World Cup, in the following season they finished 14th and in 2006/07 they were ninth. In the second race of the 2008/09 season in Sigulda , Penz / Fischler finished third on the podium for the first time. The Luge World Championships in 2005 in Park City as a 16, finished Penz / Fischler 2007 they finished eighth in doubles and won the bronze medal with the Austrian team. At the 2006 European Championships in Winterberg , they finished eleventh. In 2009 they won the silver medal at the 2009 Luge World Championships in Lake Placid in the team competition and were eighth in the doubles race. In Altenberg , the doubles achieved their best World Cup result in second place in December 2009 and only had to admit defeat to the overall World Cup winners of the season, André Florschütz and Torsten Wustlich .
At the European Luge Championships 2010 in Sigulda, Penz / Fischler finished fifth. In the overall ranking of the 2009/10 season it was enough for both of them only to rank 11. In the following season they improved significantly and ended up fifth in the overall World Cup. However, they could not take the performance to the Luge World Championships 2011 in Cesana Pariol and were only 14th in doubles. In the 2011/12 season he won the first World Cup on the bobsleigh Igls artificial ice rink in Innsbruck-Igls, ahead of the Russians Yuschakow / Machnutin and their teammates Linger / Linger. In Whistler they also celebrated another podium finish as second. At the final European Championships in 2012 in Paramonowo (Moscow) , they celebrated another World Cup victory with their title win and thus came fourth in the overall World Cup ranking.
In the 2012/13 season Penz / Fischler were able to further improve their performance. Except for one World Cup, they were on the podium in all races, mostly they only had to admit defeat to the Germans Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt . At the 2013 European Luge Championships, they both celebrated bronze medals. At the following World Luge Championships in 2013 , Penz / Fischler finished fifth. At the end of the season they finished third behind the two teams from Germany in the overall World Cup ranking.
At the beginning of the 2013/14 Olympic season, both of them secured the first podium of the season with third place in the second World Cup in Innsbruck-Igls. In Winterberg they had to share this space with the Italians Ludwig Rieder and Patrick Rastner . They also secured third place in the team relay on the same track. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , Penz / Fischler were still in third place after the first run, but fell back to 19th place after driving errors. Both finished the overall World Cup a little later in fourth place.
In the 2014/15 season , Penz / Fischler rose to the first Austrian team for the first time after the Linger brothers resigned. They demonstrated their good performance with various podium placements. The duo won the silver medal at the 2015 and 2016 World Championships . At the European Championships in Sochi in 2015 , both of them achieved this success just 0.3 seconds behind the Germans Wendl / Arlt.
At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , Penz / Fischler won the silver medal in the doubles, 0.088 seconds behind Wendl / Arlt .
On August 1, 2018, Penz and Fischler announced their retirement and announced a farewell trip as part of the World Cup kick-off in Igls on 24/25. November 2018. Penz has been suffering from back pain for years and already has a contract as a trainer with the Austrian Luge Association. Fischler is aiming for a professional career in the police force.
