Paul Hildgartner

Paul Hildgartner (born June 8, 1952 in Kiens ) is a former luge rider from South Tyrol who started very successfully for Italy .

Hildgartner is one of the most successful tobogganists. At the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo , he and Walter Plaikner won the gold medal in the doubles, 1980 in Lake Placid silver in the singles and crowned his career at the 1984 Olympic Games in Sarajevo with an Olympic victory in singles.

Always with Walter Plaikner, Paul Hildgartner was world champion in doubles in 1971 in Olang and 3rd at the 1973 World Championships in Oberhof. In the single-seater competition he was world champion in Imst in 1978, in 1979 in Königsee and in 1983 in Lake Placid he won the bronze medal.

Hildgartner won gold four times at European championships: in a double-seater with Walter Plaikner in 1971 and 1974 in Imst, in a single-seater in 1978 in Hammarstrand and in 1984 in Olang; he also won silver in 1980 in Olang.

As one of the most successful Italian winter sports, was Paul Hildgartner from CONI Flags at the opening ceremonies for the 1984 Olympic Games in Sarajevo and in 1988 in Calgary honored.

The 17th curve of the Olympic track by Cesana Torinese ( Turin 2006 ) was named after him. Hildgartner has been a member of the FIL Hall of Fame since 2004 .
