Anton Winkler

Anton Winkler (born February 23, 1954 in Bischofswiesen ; † October 8, 2016 in Berchtesgaden ) was one of the most successful luge athletes of the second half of the 1970s .

In 1978, Anton Winkler was the first overall winner of the newly introduced Luge World Cup ahead of the great Italian luge rider Paul Hildgartner . At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , Winkler won the bronze medal, at the 1978 World Championships in Imst he was second, and the year before, third in Igls . In 1979 he won bronze again together with Anton Wembacher , this time in a two-seater. In 1977 he was European champion at the European Championships in Königssee . German champion was Winkler in 1976 and 1980. In addition, there are the German junior championships 1970 to 1973 of the athlete starting for RC Berchtesgaden .

Winkler started for the RC Berchtesgaden . After his active career, he became a volunteer trainer at the Berchtesgaden-Königssee base. He also acted as FIL referee at races at Königssee for many years. He died after a serious illness at the age of 62.
