Mărăşeşti ([ mərəˈʃeʃtʲ ]; ) is a city in the Romanian part of the Vltava River , in the Vrancea district , about 25 km north of Focşani and 200 km northeast of Bucharest on the eastern edge of the Eastern Carpathians . In 2002 it had a total of 12,726 inhabitants, 11,122 of them in the city proper, the rest in the cadastral communities .
history
The city is famous for a major battle in July – August 1917 (August 6th, decision day) between the German Emperor and the Romanian Kingdom .
Attractions
- The mausoleum containing the remains of 5,632 Romanian soldiers was built to celebrate the Romanian victory. The construction of the mausoleum began in 1923 and was inaugurated on September 18, 1938.
- The monument to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier , which was inaugurated in Bucharest on May 17, 1923, stood on May 22nd / 23rd. December 1958 to October 26, 1991 in the mausoleum of Mărăşeşti. Today it is back in its original position.
