Panciu ( Hungarian Páncsu ) is a small town in Vrancea County in Romania .
Geographical location
Panciu is located in the Moldau region in the foothills of the Eastern Carpathians , at the foothills of the Vrancea Mountains . The city center is located on a small ridge that is bordered by two streams to the north and south. The district capital Focşani is located about 30 km south.
history
The oldest archaeological finds in the region date from the Paleolithic . In 1589 Panciu was first mentioned in a document under the name Crucea . In the 17th century, the town, which mainly made its living from viticulture, developed into a local administrative center. In 1798 the place name Panciu was first mentioned. In addition to Romanians , there were also many Jews living in Panciu (1,410 in 1900). In 1907 riots broke out in Panciu as part of the peasant uprising in Romania . The place was hit by disasters several times; for example by a fire in 1869, by an earthquake in 1894 and by fighting in the First World War in 1916. The most severe impact was an earthquake on November 10, 1940 with a magnitude of 7.4 on the Richter scale . 42 people were killed, 70 seriously injured and almost the entire place was destroyed. The subsequently rebuilt city largely consists of prefabricated buildings .
Today, in addition to viticulture, the textile industry and food processing are of primary importance.
