Adjud ( Hungarian Egyedhalma ) is a city in Vrancea County in Romania .

Geographical location

Adjud is located in the Moldau in the foothills of the Eastern Carpathians , near the confluence of the Trotuș in the Siret . The district capital Focşani is located about 50 km south of Adjud.

history

The oldest archaeological finds in the region date from the Bronze Age . Adjud was first mentioned in a document in 1433. In 1838 the place received the official market rights , in 1920 it was elevated to town. Due to its location, the place has been an important local trading post for centuries. Today the light industry (textile and paper production) is of prime importance.

population

In the 2002 census, 17,585 inhabitants were registered in the city, including 17,073 Romanians , 499 Roma and 11 Hungarians or Tschangos .

Adjud is a major rail hub in eastern Romania. Here branches off the important long-distance connection from Bucharest to Suceava, the railway line towards Sfântu Gheorghe in Transylvania . There is regular bus service to Bacau and Focșani , among others . The European route 85 runs through the city .
