The Sereth in Ukraine and Romania |
The Sereth ( Romanian Siret ; Ukrainian Серет ; Russian Сирет ; Hungarian Szeret ), called Hierasus in Latin in ancient times , is a left tributary of the lower Danube . It rises near Szypotprivat in the eastern pre- chain of the Carpathians .
The name of the Romanian city Siret is derived from the name of the river.
course
In northern Bukovina ( Ukraine ) it flows in an arc to the east. Below the town of Siret it enters the Romanian region of Moldau , which it flows through as the main river , almost parallel to the Prut , southwards in a wide valley between low heights, until it reaches the plain at Adjud . Turning to the east, it forms the border with Wallachia here . After another 416 km it flows into the Danube at Galați . The river has a length of 706 km, of which 596 km in Romania, is up to 180 m wide and 7–8 m deep. The catchment area amounts to 42,830 km², the water flow just before it flows into the Danube at 230 m³ / s.
The Sereth becomes floatable already below Schipoth , not far from its source. It is navigable for smaller vehicles from Kolionesti .
Breeding birds on the Sereth
In 2008, during a trip with a Canadian on a section of the Sereth of 175 km, starting east of Suceava near the village of Hutani to the village of Brad (Communa Negri) about 20 km from Bucau , the birds were documented. Since the documentation took place in July, some species of birds had already flown out. On the basis of the counted fledgling young birds and the observed adult birds, the breeding populations of the bird species breeding on the river were counted or estimated. When driving were at least 30 breeding pairs (bp) ringed plovers , sandpipers as a common breeding bird, Mittelmeermöwe as a possible breeding bird on gravel islands in Siret, approximately 50 bp common terns to 50 bp of the kingfisher in loess walls on the river, many individual couples and small breeding communities of bee-eaters in Loess walls on the river, some bp hoopoes in loess walls on the river, 86 colonies with 1810 bp sand martins in loess walls on the river, individual bp wheatears on the river and numerous bp tree sparrows in brood tubes of sand martin and bee-eater documented.
Sereth line
To protect against attacks by the Vltava (region) or the Black Sea , the fortification of the Sereth line was built from 1889 according to plans by Maximilian Schumann . The three bases Focșani , Namoloassa and Galatz were based on pure artillery defense with about 570 guns .
