Vyshnytsia Rajon (Ukrainian Вижницький район / Wyschnyzkyj rajon ; Russian Вижницкий район / Wischnizki rajon , Romanian Raionul Vijniţa ) is a Rajon (administrative district) in the western Ukraine, in the Oblast of Chernivtsi .
geography
The center of the district is the city of Vyshnytsia , in the north it borders on Snyatyn district in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast , in the northeast on Kizman district , in the east and southeast on Storozhynets district , in the south on a short section with Romania , in the west to the Rajon Putyla and in the northwest to the Rajon Kosiv which is also in the Oblast Ivano-Frankivsk.
history
The Rajon was established in 1940 as part of the Ukrainian SSR after the occupation of northern Bukovina by the Soviet Union. In 2001, more than 98 percent of the population indicated their nationality as Ukrainian.
On February 11, 2005 the village, which had been called Lukiwzi (Луківці) until then, was renamed Lukawzi.
