Life

Angela Gheorghiu, the daughter of a train driver, started singing as a young student in the music school in her hometown. At the age of 14, the talented young singer was sent to the George Enescu Music High School in Bucharest to study singing with Mia Barbu after graduating from the music college . At the age of 23 she made her debut with her diploma performance as Mimi in La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini .

After the political change in Romania, she left her homeland in 1990 and was engaged at the Royal Opera House in London , where she made her debut as Zerlina in Mozart's Don Giovanni . Another great success for her was the Violetta in La traviata with Georg Solti on the conductor's podium: Her performance spontaneously convinced the television management of the BBC to change the program and switch it live to the Royal Opera House in London in order to watch the performance on television transfer. This is how the triumphant advance of the soprano began in London .

In 1992 Angela Gheorghiu sang for the first time at the Vienna State Opera under her compatriot Ioan Holender , then in Hamburg and in 1993 at the New York Metropolitan Opera . In addition to her opera appearances, Angela Gheorghiu has recorded numerous CDs and is one of the internationally highly regarded female opera stars. She also likes to sing songs from her Romanian homeland.

Roberto Alagna and Angela Alagna-Gheorghiu

Gheorghiu was married to the French tenor Roberto Alagna for the second time from 1996 to 2013 and has since been officially called Alagna-Gheorghiu. With him she played and sang Tosca in a live film adaptation in 2001 with scenes from the opera and in Abbey Road Studios in London. In September 2007, after a long time, the artist couple stood together on stage again, in the Opera House of Marseille in the opera Marius et Fanny by the Romanian composer Vladimir Cosma . In 2007, Gheorghiu was fired from a bohemian production by the Chicago Lyric Opera because she had failed to attend six out of ten rehearsals and had traveled to New York without a vacation permit to see a performance by her husband at the Metropolitan Opera. After a joint appearance with Alagna at the Vienna State Opera in October 2008 in Faust (director: Nicolas Joel ), the couple appeared again in January 2009 at the Metropolitan Opera in La rondine . The event was broadcast live on German television and in some HD cinemas. In early 2013, the couple announced their split.
