Hercules is the 35th full-length cartoon from Walt Disney Studios and was released in 1997 . It refers to the adventures of the character Hercules from Greek mythology.

action

Hercules is born on Olympus as the son of the god father Zeus and Hera. Hades , eloquent god of the underworld and powerful adversary and brother of Zeus, has Hercules kidnapped to earth, as he was prophesied by the Moiren that only Hercules could thwart his plans for revolution. So he wants to let him become mortal with a bottle of magical elixir through his assistants, pitch and sulfur, and then let him kill. The attempted murder fails because the baby does not completely drink the bottle. As the foster child of the childless couple Amphitrion and Alkmene, Hercules grows into a mortal person, but still has the power of the gods.

As a young man, Hercules learns the secret of his origins and now wants to prove himself a true hero in order to be able to return to Olympus. Hades, furious that his assistants have failed, now takes the destruction of Hercules into his own hands and confronts him with a number of monsters such as a centaur, a multi-headed hydra and other monsters. Through the appropriate training and with the help of the former hero trainer Philoctetes, a satyr (half human, half goat) called Phil, Hercules succeeds in killing the monsters and gaining an immense amount of fame, popularity and fortune.

On his way to becoming a hero, Hercules falls in love with Megara, called Meg, without realizing that she is one of Hades' followers, even if not entirely voluntarily. With their help, the god succeeds in getting Hercules to give up his powers for a certain time. On the condition that nothing happens to Meg, he agrees. Olympus seems to fall under Hades' rule in the decisive battle of the gods against the titans . The one-eyed Cyclops is supposed to kill Hercules, but Megara and Hercules' flying horse friend Pegasus bring back Phil, who wanted to return to his homeland after a previous argument. Hercules remains victorious despite his lack of godly power and wins it again when Meg sacrifices himself to save Hercules from a falling column. Hercules wins the decisive battle for the gods, but initially loses Meg, whose thread of life has meanwhile been cut by the Moiren.

Now Hercules is also ready to give his own life to save Meg's soul from the underworld, which makes him a true hero. His godly power saves him from dying when he brings Meg's soul back from the river of the dead. Together they will be carried to Olympus. Although celebrated and admired by his parents and all other gods, he renounces his immortality in order to be able to live with Meg on earth. Phil's big dream of having trained the greatest hero of all time is also fulfilled when Hercules' image, made of stars, shines on the night firmament.

criticism

“He falls back on a mythology that has been trimmed down for American viewing habits with flat characters, who only occasionally develops humor and primarily tries to entertain with short-lived puns. Technically quite high-ranking, the film unmistakably bears the signature of the Disney studio, but is hardly influenced by its philosophy. "

Songs

  • Every word is true (The Gospel Truth) - sung by the muses. The beginning of the film is narrated and commented scene by scene by the muses.
  • I'll prove it ( Go the Distance ) - sung by Hercules. Since he is different, he is not accepted by anyone. However, he resolves to change this at some point.

  • Only One Last Hope - Sung by Phil while training with Hercules.
  • In seconds to 100 (English: Zero to Hero) - Sung by the muses, when Hercules' streak of success begins and does not end.
  • I do not want a man (ger .: I Will not Say I'm In Love) - Sung by Meg and the Muses. They want to convince her that she has fallen in love with Hercules.

background

  • In the Greek original, the sagas, his name is Heracles , only the Romans made Hercules out of it.
  • In the myths, Hercules was not the son of Zeus and Hera , as in the film , but the son of Zeus and the mortal Alcmene .
  • The three moirs are also based on the three Graien , since they pass on their only eye, which in the mythology of Perseus is thrown into the Triton Sea.
  • The characters were designed by the well-known British cartoonist Gerald Scarfe , which means that the film is characterized by an idiosyncratic visual style that is very different from other Disney films.
  • Heracles' horse was, according to myths, Areion ; in the movie it's Pegasus .
  • Only five muses are represented in the film , while there are nine in total in mythology.
  • Disney has taken great liberties in handling the Hercules myth, as some of the original material was viewed as unsuitable for young viewers, for example the conception of Hercules by a god posing as a mortal husband and the attempts of his stepmother Hera to Killing Hercules. Disney also used various stereotypes in shaping the appearance of the Greek gods, for example with Poseidon as a fish. In addition, Hades is actually not an enemy of Zeus or a bad devil , but simply a god who does his work.
  • The animated series Disney's Hercules was created based on the characters in the film . Characters from the movie also come in some episodes of the animated series Disney's House of Mouse (House of Mouse) and in previously published seven of eight games of the Kingdom Hearts - Computer game series before.
  • The storyline is heavily inspired by the films Superman and Rocky .
  • The Disney cartoonists have drawn some parallels to other Disney films in Hercules. For example, the lion skin from Scar from The Lion King appears in the scene where Hercules is about to be painted on a vase. Employees were also deployed. In Hercules, directors John Musker and Ron Clements appear with their own voices. You can see them at the beginning when Hercules destroys the marketplace without any ill will.
  • Hercules had its US premiere on June 14, 1997 . The German premiere of the film was on November 20, 1997. It was released on video on August 13, 1998 and on DVD on March 23, 2000 .

continuation

In 1999, the sequel Hercules: Zero to Hero was directed by Bob Kline , but it was produced for video sales.
