Go the Distance is a song from the 1997 film Hercules . It was written by Alan Menken (music) and David Zippel (text).
Use in film
Hercules feels that he is not where he belongs. He resolves to find out where it is and get there no matter how far he has to go. When he learns that he is a foundling but has a connection to Zeus, he goes to his temple. The song is sung by Roger Bart , who took over the singing of young Hercules. The German-language version is called Ich kann es noch Verweis ( I'll still prove it) and is sung by Fredrik Lycke .
The recapitulation accompanies Hercules and Pegasus on the way to Phil. It is also sung by Roger Bart or in the German version by Fredrik Lycke.
Awards
Go the Distance was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe , each in the Best Movie Song category . The song was also nominated for the OFTA Award for Best Original Song . On each of these nominations, the song lost to My Heart Will Go On from the movie Titanic .
Cover versions
As was common in Disney films at the time, cover versions of the songs were already played in the credits of the film and released as singles, such as the cover version by Michael Bolton . The single made it into the US charts for 20 weeks from June 7, 1997, reaching number 24. It entered the UK charts on November 8, 1997, stayed there for four weeks (two more followed in January 1998) and reached place 14.
Other cover versions are by Ricky Martin with the title No importa la distancia , Mannheim Steamroller , Harrison Craig , David Bustamante (title: No importa la distancia ), K-Ci & JoJo and Lucas Grabeel . In the version of the a cappella quartet Vocal Spectrum , Go the Distance was voted best barbershop song in 2009.
