David Zippel

David Zippel (born May 17, 1954 in Easton , Pennsylvania ) is an American musical theater writer.

Life

David Zippel grew up in Easton. Even in high school , he wrote funny parody texts on popular pieces of music to make fun of his teachers. At the University of Pennsylvania he wrote a musical called Rotunda with and graduated in 1976. He then attended Harvard Law School to become a lawyer specializing in theater. During his student days, however, he met Wally Harper , Barbara Cook's companion . He was just looking for a songwriting partner. So they wrote several songs together, with Cook two ( Sing a Song With Me and It Takes Nothing Away from Me) premiered at their Carnegie Hall concert , which was then released on their live album.

In 1989 he made his debut with the musical City of Angels , which won several Tony Awards . The Goodbye Girl followed in 1993 , based on the 1977 film The Subtenant .

He made his film debut with the film Die Schwanenprinzessin (1994), for which he not only co-wrote several songs but was also the singing voice for Jean-Bob. He received his first Oscar nomination for the song Go the Distance from Hercules (1997). His second followed just a year later for the Mulan Score , for which he also received an Annie Award .

In 1997 he wrote the theme song for the sitcom Veronica .

In 2004 the musical The Woman in White by Andrew Lloyd Webber followed , based on the novel The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins . In the same year he made his directorial debut with the musical Princesses . In 2009 he was involved in the stage program Liza's at The Palace .... by Liza Minnelli .

In 2011 he wrote the text for the song The Star-Spangled Man from Captain America: The First Avenger , which is based on Irving Berlin .

In 2019 the musical Hercules was released , for which he also wrote lyrics.
