Pokémon - The film is based on the anime Pokémon , invented by Satoshi Tajiri , whereby the first Pokémon games (see: Pokémon Red Edition ) by Game Freak were the basic idea for the film.

The film was a huge commercial success worldwide. With grossing US $ 163.64 million, it was the second most successful anime in Japan at the time, after Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke . In Germany, where the film started on April 13, 2000, 3.22 million viewers saw it, making it the sixth most successful film in Germany in 2000. Warner Bros. Entertainment released the film in Germany and is also known as Pokémon - The Movie: Mewtwo vs. Mew .

action

A new Pokémon is cloned in a laboratory, away from humans . Mewtwo, the strongest Pokémon of all, can break free thanks to his psychic powers, destroy the laboratory and kill the researchers. He is able to speak like a human, which is unusual for Pokémon, and shows high intelligence. Mewtwo learned from humans that it was created from a Pokémon, namely Mew. He wants to prove that a clone is stronger than the original and defeat Mew. Before that, however, Giovanni, head of Team Rocket, manages to put on armor to Mewtwo to banish his powers. The fight against Gary for the Earth Order (8th order for recognition in the Pokémon League) is shown. Then Mewtwo flees from Giovanni and frees himself from his armor.

Ash, Misty and Brock are observed by Mewtwo before he sends the Pokémon Dragoran - his assistant - to Ash to present him with an invitation. Quite a few Pokémon trainers are invited to the island of "New Island", but only a few trainers make it to New Island because Mewtwo has conjured up a huge hurricane. Ash and his friends arrive as the last trainers. Meanwhile, Team Rocket arrives at Mewtwo's cloning laboratory, followed by Mew. Meowth is cloned here, like many other Pokémon before. The clones come to life and Mewtwo lets clone fight the original. Bisaflor, Turtok and Ash's Charizard each fight against their clone and lose significantly. As a bonus, Mewtwo calls for the trainer's Pokémon and with the help of black Pokéballs he can catch and clone one Pokémon after the other. Eventually he also manages to clone Pikachu , with Ash following him to the laboratory. A fight with the clones ensues, with Ash being rescued by Mew and Mew then entering the fight. Meowth doesn't fight, Pikachu endures all blows. Finally Ash wants to break off all fighting and throws himself between Mewtwo and Mew's attacks. It petrifies and instead of fighting, there is silence. Pikachu tries to revive Ash, but he fails. Even his thunderbolt doesn't help anymore. The tears of all Pokémon bring Ash back to life. Mewtwo and Mew seal the peace and disappear with the clones in the sky.

Ash and the others' memories are erased and they wake up in the Pokémon Center next to Sister Joy at the harbor. The storm has subsided and you see a mew in the sky.

background

The film takes place between episodes 69 and 70 of the first season. In these episodes Ash has seven medals and is on his way to Vertania City, with some excerpts already appearing in the anime (Gary's fight with Giovanni, Mewtwo flees from Giovanni).

Mewtwo and Mew are the first legendary Pokémon to make a major appearance (Ho-Oh can only be seen briefly in the first episode of the series).

Donphan is the first Pokémon (after Togepi in episode 50) that comes from the second generation and is not caught by our friends.

The music is from Shinji Miyazaki . Directed by Kunihiko Yuyama .

The friendship of the girl Amber with Mewtwo in the opening credits has been completely cut out outside of Japan. In Germany, the sequence appeared as an extra in English with German subtitles in the home theater evaluation.

The trainer Corey incorrectly calls his pigeon boss Tauboga. This and other errors were taken from the English translation into German.

Pikachu's Vacation is the short film at the beginning of the film. There are other Pokémon that appear in the second generation (including Snubull and Marill).

The film was released on May 31, 2019 as a German reprint on DVD and for the first time also on Blu-ray on Polyband Anime , although the short film Pikachus Ferien is missing in this new edition.
