Satoshi Tajiri ( Japanese 田 尻 智 , Tajiri Satoshi ; born August 28, 1965 in the Setagaya district of Tokyo ) is the head of Game Freak and the inventor of Pokémon .

Life

Satoshi Tajiri spent his childhood in Machida , a suburb of Tokyo, where he preferred to collect insects. Tajiri hunted them everywhere, including on the banks of the ponds, in the fields or in the forest. He kept coming up with new techniques to attract bugs. The boy was so fascinated by the insects that his friends called him Konchū-hakase ( 昆虫 博士 , dt. "Dr. insect").

Tajiri didn't like going to school. His father wanted him to become an electrician, but Tajiri was against it. Later, in the 1970s, the fields and pools were cultivated. At this point, the first ideas about the Pokémon germinated . Tajiri wanted the new generation of children to have the opportunity to hunt creatures, as he had done himself as a child. He enrolled in a technology school.

In 1982 Tajiri created the game magazine Game Freak together with friends . One of these friends was Ken Sugimori , who drew all the pictures of the Pokémon. In 1991 Tajiri discovered the Game Boy . When he first saw the Link Cables , he immediately imagined insects crawling along the cables. The Pokémon were now born. In the beginning, the game was based on some of the ideas about creatures from another studio that invented creatures. He also wanted to name his newly created creatures "Capsule Monsters" because the Pokémon should still be caught in capsules in the planned beta version of the game, as the Pokéballs had not yet been invented, but Tajiri had problems getting the rights for secure this name as an early version of "Yu-Gi-Oh!" had already claimed this name for himself. That's how he came up with the name Pokémon. Tajiri called his company Game Freak , like the fanzine he wrote in his childhood.

Tajiri started working for Nintendo and spent the next six years inventing the Pokémon. He became a friend of Shigeru Miyamoto , the creator of Mario Bros. , The Legend of Zelda , Pikmin and Donkey Kong . The characters Ash Ketchum and Gary Eich are named Satoshi and Shigeru in the Japanese versions of the Pokémon .
