The Legend of Zelda ( Japanese ゼ ル ダ の 伝 説 , Zeruda no Densetsu , literally "The Legend of Zelda"), or Zelda for short, is a video game series from the Japanese company Nintendo . Since the first The Legend of Zelda in 1986, 19 "main parts" and some offshoots have appeared. The series was invented by Shigeru Miyamoto , a Nintendo employee who mostly plays the role of producer in the development of the games. Almost all of the games were developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development , with the exception of a few games, which Flagship / Capcom , Vanpool and Grezzo were awarded todevelop. The series is one of Nintendo's premier franchises .

The main role in the games is played by the protagonist Link as a playable character, and Zelda, the princess of the kingdom of Hyrule and Ganon, or his human appearance, Ganondorf, as the antagonist in most of the games. The action mostly revolves around the Triforce, a divine artifact of infinite power. The games take place over several epochs, so Link and Zelda are mostly reincarnations of their former people.

Zelda is considered to be the most successful action-adventure series to date; the most successful part of the series, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild , sold over 18 million copies.

General

Clad cosplayers : Link (left) and Zelda (right)
Cosplayer as a link

The player takes on the role of a hero named Link - the name is freely selectable in most Zelda games. Equipped with sword and shield , he must save the kingdom of Hyrule and other countries from various kinds of threats. In a majority of the games it is Link's task to free the eponymous (princess) Zelda from the clutches of the wicked Gerudo king Ganondorf (or in his guise as Ganon ), who is the triforce of power, a divine relic of immense power tried to seize. However, it is not only Ganondorf that Link has to stop, he also has to fight other villains.

Core elements

The Triforce

The Triforce from The Legend of Zelda

The Triforce consists of three golden equilateral triangles. It is often represented in the shape of a Sierpinski level 2 triangle , but the individual parts are not firmly connected. Often the three fragments are kept separately. In Ocarina of Time, The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess there is a fragment each in the bodies of Ganondorf (strength), Link (courage) and Zelda (wisdom). The individual fragments each contain an aspect of one of the three goddesses (Din, Farore, Nayru) who created it. When all three fragments are united, one wish is to be granted to the owner of the Triforce. In the first part only the fragments of power and that of wisdom appeared; the name therefore refers to the triangular shape of the fragments and not - as is often assumed - to the number.

In many Zelda games there is a triflece symbol on the left back of the hand, which identifies him as a chosen hero. The lower right fragment, which stands for courage, is highlighted.

There is a force in The Minish Cap , but it was only shown as a triangle. However, it has the same powers as the Triforce. How it is related to the Triforce is not known and therefore the content of some fan speculation.

In A Link Between Worlds there is a second Triforce in Lorule, which is upside down compared to the Hyrule Triforce. This was (not like the Hyrule Triforce) destroyed after the power of the Triforce had led to wars instead of sealing it, as in Hyrule, which almost led to the demise of Lorule.

So the Triforce is imperative for Hyrule to survive.

The upper world

The starting point for most of the games in the series is an upper world in which the player can move freely. Here, among other things, he can visit villages, talk to other people (which appear in text form on the screen) and solve numerous side tasks in order to improve his equipment or finances as a reward. In addition, from the upper world you get into the relevant labyrinths for solving the game (in this genre also known as dungeons , here mostly temples, caves, castles or shrines), in which you have to solve puzzles and fight opponents.

Equipment

In addition to a map, compass and keys, with only a few exceptions, there is an important piece of equipment to be found in every labyrinth, for example a bow , a bomb bag with bombs or a boomerang . Sometimes these items also represent an upgrade of existing items , which are expanded to include new or improved functions. Such objects are useful not only in combat, but also to solve many puzzles, to access new areas on the upper world and to successfully survive against the final boss ("boss") of every labyrinth. Basically, the labyrinths are designed in such a way that the equipment to be found in the respective labyrinth is absolutely necessary in order to master the puzzles and the end boss.

Hearts / heart parts

Heart symbolize the life energy of the link . These are arranged in a kind of bar, therefore often referred to as the heart bar. In most games you start with three hearts. However, the number can be increased by finding other special hearts. The hearts in the cardiac groin represent a solid unit that is not lost, but can only be "emptied" through injury.

There are three different findable heart variants: Small hearts, which can usually be found by smashing certain objects such as vases, fill up an empty heart unit. The heart container increases the life energy by one heart and is obtained in most Zelda games by defeating a certain opponent, usually the last opponent in a labyrinth. The heart parts, mostly obtainable by solving tasks or by finding them in special places, result in a heart container in combination with other heart parts. Usually a number of four heart parts are required (five in Twilight Princess ) to get a heart container from them. The number of maximum hearts in the heart bar, in most games between 14 and 20 hearts, is due to the limited number of heart containers and heart parts in the game world.

While the large heart containers can be found in every game, the heart parts are not found in the games The Legend of Zelda , Zelda II: The Adventure of Link , Four Swords , Four Swords Adventures , Phantom Hourglass , Spirit Tracks and Breath of the Wild .

Rubies

Concept drawing of rubies in green, blue and red colors

Rubies are the currency in almost all Zelda games (the name comes from a translation error; actually it meant rupees ). In most cases, these are used to buy items such as potions, bombs, arrows or other items. They are also required in order to be able to solve certain mini-tasks , also known as sidequests . Rubies can be obtained by cutting grass, destroying bushes or enemies, larger amounts can be found in chests and jugs.

Rubies come in different colors, each color corresponds to a certain value. The value of each color varies from game to game. In The Legend of Zelda, for example, the color orange is assigned the value 1 ruby, while in A Link to the Past, as in most other parts, this is assigned to the color green. Many games have larger versions of rubies, which are more valuable. However, black rubies will subtract rubies in any game they appear in. However, the total varies from game to game.

companion

In most games, Link is given a companion. He supports him on his adventure with advice and information. In addition, they usually do the speaking instead of Link in dialogues with NPCs. The companions are fairies, speaking objects, ghosts or even people.

The companions listed by game:

  • Ocarina of Time - Navi (Fee)
  • Majora's Mask - Taya (Fee)
  • The Wind Waker - Der Rote Leuenkönig (Ship)
  • The Minish Cap - Ezelo (cap that used to be a Minish)
  • Twilight Princess - Midna (Princess of the Shadow Realm)
  • Phantom Hourglass - Ciela (light spirit of courage), but also the light spirits of wisdom and power. If you upgrade these, you get special skills: sword shot (courage), double life (wisdom) and double attack damage (power)
  • Spirit Tracks - Zelda (villains attacked Zelda and kidnapped her, but her spirit escaped. In the form of her spirit, she accompanies Link on his journey)
  • Skyward Sword - Phai (sword spirit of the master sword)
  • Hyrule Warriors (Legends) - Proxy (Fee)

Game controls

Like most video games, almost all Zelda games are controlled with a controller or with the controls on the handheld . Depending on the game, the player uses a digital control pad or an analog mini joystick , which, in contrast to a conventional joystick, is operated with the thumb instead of the whole hand to move the game figure. All actions, e.g. B. opening doors, having conversations with other people, reading scriptures and confirming / canceling are triggered by the use of context-sensitive buttons. A given number of buttons can be freely assigned to items such as weapons and tools. Depending on the number of buttons available, the item buttons also accommodate the context-dependent actions; conversely, primarily related utensils such as shield and sword can also be assigned as fixed functions. With the release of the Wii console, a new control aspect was also introduced. Actions are triggered by moving the controls in the room, which is mostly based on the animation in the game. Manual aiming with projectile weapons also works like aiming with a light gun . The games Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks for the Nintendo DS are controlled exclusively via the touchscreen. In the 3D versions of the series, an additional button for constantly targeting opponents and other interaction objects has become established.

music

With the exception of the parts The Adventure of Link and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Kōji Kondō has been the composer and chiefly responsible for the music in the series since the first game and thus also significantly involved in the success of the soundtracks . Similar to the Super Mario - the Zelda series has a recurring main theme. It is usually used on the console titles to accompany the game on the upper world. For Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess 's overworld themes were composed, but also based on the main theme.

The music also plays a mechanical role in most of the Zelda titles . It is possible to use musical instruments and melodies to take advantage of quick travel opportunities on the upper world, to change the environmental conditions or to trigger other game-relevant events. Examples of this are the eponymous ocarina in Ocarina of Time or the - also eponymous - " baton of the wind" (English: "Wind Waker") in The Wind Waker .

(Cult) status

Due to its continuity, the game series has been able to build up and maintain a growing fan base over the years. On the technical side, the constant integration of numerous old and new techniques of the adventure genre into a new work, such as the technical possibilities that are always adapted to the current console, helped . The numerous awards for the individual games are indicative of the ongoing quality of the series. In this way, Zelda achieved positive fame and recognition beyond the actual fan base, although the games, with a few exceptions, only appeared for Nintendo game consoles and thus reached fewer players.

In 2005, the main character Link got a star on the Walk of Game . In 2018 the game was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame .

The editors of GEE magazine included the first part of the series in their list of the “50 most important works in games history” and stated: “ From just 128 kilobytes, Shigeru Miyamoto's design team created a huge kingdom […] - 'Zelda' was the blueprint for genres as diverse as action adventure, fantasy RPG and open game worlds à la 'Grand Theft Auto'. "

"Play! A video game symphony XX" live concert with Zelda Medley on June 2, 2007. On the screens The Legend of Zelda (1986) .

Music from Zelda games has been performed at various concerts, including in Tokyo, Leipzig (game music concert ), Stockholm and Detroit. In the Symphonic Legends - Music from Nintendo concert , Zelda was honored by the WDR Radio Orchestra Cologne with a 35-minute sound poem . Zelda made up the entire second half of the event, divided into five sections: Hyrulian Child, Dark Lord, Princess of Destiny, Battlefield, and Hero of Time . For the 25th anniversary of the series, concerts were held in Tokyo, London and Los Angeles in October 2011.

Games

Zelda games have appeared for most of the Nintendo consoles. Older titles were republished on later systems, since the Wii console as download versions as part of Nintendo's Virtual Console .

In addition to Nintendo's original Zelda games, Philips produced three Zelda games for its CD-i system: Link: Die Gratzen des Böse (Original title: Link: The Faces of Evil ), Zelda: The Magic Wand of Gamelon (Original title: Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon ) and Zelda's Adventure (English for Zelda's adventure ). Philips had obtained the necessary licenses in the context of a partnership to develop a CD-ROM drive for the Super Nintendo .

Zelda Game & Watch was released in 1989. It was played on a hinged Game & Watch with two screens. The aim of the game was to kill eight dragons in order to free the princess. It was reissued as part of the Nintendo Mini Classics . It's also included as a reward in Game & Watch Gallery 4 for GBA.

Inside the Zelda universe

After initially Adventure of Link as a second game after The Legend of Zelda was released, it was called the successor and thus represented the chronological direct successor. That appeared to A Link to the Past was a prequel shown that even before The Legend of Zelda plays . Link's Awakening is said to be set between A Link to the Past and The Legend of Zelda .

In 1998 Ocarina of Time was released and the timeline was broken for the first time: Instead of a prequel to The Legend of Zelda , A Link to the Past should now, according to an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto, suddenly be classified as a sequel to Adventure of Link, while Link's Awakening was behind could be assigned to any zeldatitel. However, it was later corrected that A Link to the Past is set between Ocarina of Time and The Legend of Zelda .

The split timeline was also introduced with the Majora's Mask game , but here with 2 timelines: The one that plays after the adult end of Ocarina of Time and is continued with A Link to the Past , and the one that takes place after the child End of Ocarina of Time and continued with Majora's Mask .

2001 saw the release of the two Oracle-of -games and since then Link's Awakening has been viewed more often as a direct sequel to them, because at the end you see Link leaving with a ship, which is similar to the ship from the intro to Link's Awakening .

In 2003 The Wind Waker was released , which came without further explanation as a direct sequel to the adult ending Ocarina of Time , a place that was already occupied with A Link to the Past in the timeline . Since then, statements about the timeline have been kept low, but it is said that Twilight Princess takes place in the child timeline some time after Majora's Mask .

In 2011, a timeline was finally published again in the book Hyrule Historia zu Zelda, showing how the games are chronologically ordered within the Zelda universe. For this purpose, according to Ocarina of Time, the timeline was divided into three timelines: one after the adult end, one after the child end and one in which Link was defeated by Ganon.

The 2013 published A Link Between Worlds should be placed between Link's Awakening and the original The Legend of Zelda .

The 2014 released Hyrule Warriors is not on the timeline, according to Eiji Aonuma , as it exists as a separate dimension, but has connections to different sections of the timeline.

In 2017 Breath of the Wild was released , which is not officially classified in the timeline, but plays according to all other parts in time and has elements of every timeline.

The 2018 Zelda Encyclopia changed the timeline so that Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages now take place after Link's Awakening and represent the story of a separate link instead of being a direct sequel to A Link to the Past .

The official timeline therefore looks like this:

This DLC, as well as other content related to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in a later update, are already included in the re-release Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

The Legend of Zelda on TV

There is a 13-part animated television series that takes up elements from the first two games: In the land of Hyrule, the sorcerer Ganon, owner of the Triforce of Power, tries to get the Triforce of Wisdom to himself. Princess Zelda and young Link stand in his way. Other elements taken from the games are Link's sword, which could fire a beam of energy, and Ganon's various troop units. In contrast, Link's companion, a little fairy, and the character traits of Link (very self-confident and always looking for a kiss from the princess) and Zelda (haughty, conceited) were not present in the game templates. The series was first broadcast in the United States in 1989 as part of the Super Mario Brothers Super Show . In 2016 the complete series was released on DVD by Pidax Film.

There are also four cameo appearances by Link and Zelda in the cartoon series Captain N , in which other Nintendo heroes of the 8-bit era also meet.

Manga

The Japanese publisher Shogakukan has published a total of 15 manga for the game series The Legend of Zelda with the consent of Nintendo in Japan since 2000 . The mangaka duo A. Honda and S. Nagano, who published under the pseudonym Akira Himekawa , drew the manga. Ten games in the series are themed, two of which are summarized in a two-volume series.
