Gameplay

At the beginning of the game the player is driven by captains to his future village. You are asked various questions through which you have to determine player and village names. In addition, the position of your own house in the future village is determined. When you arrive in the village you first enter the town hall. There Pelly, the mayor's assistant, explains the most important functions, shows the player the map and tells the player where their own house is and advises them to go to it. If you have entered and left your house, you will meet Tom Nook there . He tells you that he was responsible for building the house and demands 19,800 sternis (play money) from the player. Since the player does not have any money at this point, he offers a part-time job in his shop that the player has to accept. The part-time job consists of performing various tasks and thus getting to know the controls and the other residents of the city better. The money earned can be used to repay 1400 sternis of the loan.

There are numerous options available to the player to pay off the remaining portion of the debt. He can use a fishing rod to fish in rivers, lakes or the sea, hunt insects with a net, collect fruit from trees, trade in beets or collect and sell other items. All items can be sold in Tom Nook's shop. Once the 19,800 sternis have been paid off, Tom Nook suggests an expansion of his house to the player, for which a new loan can be taken out. Numerous extensions of your own house are possible. You can expand your house six times in total.

In addition to paying off the loans, the player can help the village museum to complete the collection of fossils, insects and fish. There is also the option of buying new tops, pants, skirts, dresses and headgear in the tailor shop and dressing individually with them. And if you want to buy new furniture for your house, you can visit Tom Nook's shop. He sells tools and furniture.

Tom Nook can also expand his shop. Once a certain number of sternis have been dispensed in Tom Nook's shop, Tom Nook expands up to four times. The first store level he has at the very beginning of the game is "Nook's Store". The second level is "Super Nook", the third level is "Mega Nook" and the fourth and final level is "Hyper Nook". In order to see how many Sternis have already been spent in total in this shop, the points system is available for the player. 1 point is the equivalent of 100 stars that were issued. The point system is divided into ranks. When you have reached a certain number of points, you move up a rank. As soon as you reach a rank, the player receives a model from Tom Nook's shop in the mail. All four store levels can be obtained as miniature models in the game, depending on your score!

For a long time, it was possible to visit other players in their villages or have them visit you via an Internet connection with the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection . The online service was discontinued on May 20, 2014.
