The Nintendo 3DS is a handheld console from the Japanese company Nintendo and is the successor to the Nintendo DS models. It is the first game console that can display autostereoscopic 3D content; special glasses are therefore not required. It was launched in Japan on February 26, 2011, in Europe on March 25, and in the US on March 27. At a press event on January 19, 2011 in New York and Amsterdam, it was announced that the 3DS would cost around 250 euros (or 249.99 US dollars ).

So far, no console has been able to sell faster in Germany than the 3DS (as of March 2012). In early 2012, Nintendo of America announced that the 3DS had sold more often than the Wii in the first nine months .

history

The 3DS was presented to the public at E3 2010 on June 15, 2010. Prototypes of the device were available to visitors to E3 and could be tested. At the in-house trade fair Nintendo World 2011, the Nintendo 3DS and some software were available to the Japanese public for the first time.

In the first week after its release, the 3DS sold fewer than 400,000 copies in the US, falling short of analysts' expectations. Around 300,000 copies were sold in Europe by mid-May 2011, around 50,000 of which were in Germany. As of July 2011, the console had been sold approximately 4.3 million times worldwide. In response to these disappointing figures and a downward revised earnings forecast, Nintendo announced price cuts of 29 to 40 percent for the product on August 12, 2011. Customers who bought a 3DS before the price reduction were compensated with free, sometimes exclusive game downloads. This means that around 235,000 copies were sold that month, around 185,000 of them after the price cut.

technical features

Like its predecessor (the Nintendo DS), the Nintendo 3DS has two screens. The upper screen on the inside of the lid offers an autostereoscopic 3D display from Sharp with a diagonal of 8.97 cm (3.53 inches), which can be used without special glasses. The resolution of the 3D display is a total of 2 × 400 × 240 px, i.e. H. 400 × 240 px for each eye. The intensity of the stereoscopic display can be continuously adjusted or switched off using a slider. 3D displays can also be permanently deactivated with a password. Nintendo strongly recommends this to parents who allow children under the age of six to play with the device, although there is no evidence of any long-term damage from stereoscopic projections. The lower screen, on the other hand, is a 3-inch, pressure-sensitive touchscreen . The resolution of the touchscreen is 320 × 240 px.

The control of the 3DS is also similar to its predecessor. For better control, however, there is now an analog stick , called a slide pad, on the left. The “Start” and “Select” buttons are located on the lower edge of the touchscreen, with the 3DS also having a “home button” , similar to the Wiimote , with which it is possible to return to the main menu from games without to end the game, but only with 3DS game modules (provided no new application is started). In addition, motion control is possible via an acceleration sensor and a gyrometer . These also enable a step counter in the 3DS. (See also game coins ) As a graphics chip, the 3DS uses the “PICA200” processor technology from the Japanese company Digital Media Professionals.

Like its direct predecessor - the DSi, the 3DS also has cameras, but two on the outside of the console that allow stereoscopic photographs and one on the inside facing the player. All cameras have a VGA resolution of 640 × 480 px (0.3 megapixels). The Wi-Fi connection has been expanded so that you can connect to other 3DS systems and e.g. B. the exchange of high scores is possible. The Nintendo 3DS can always be online, even in stand-by mode, to download game updates, etc. or to use the StreetPass function (data exchange for certain games). The 2.4 GHz band is supported. For the first time, the Wi-Fi functionality can be switched on and off using a physical switch.

As with the Nintendo DS, games are delivered on the well-known game modules that have been mechanically modified so that they do not fit into the DS. The games have a maximum size of 8 GB. As with the DSi, there is also an SD (-HC) card slot that supports the internal memory, e.g. B. to save the captured photos. Similar to the Wii, an activity log is also kept, with which the user is shown the playing time for each software used.

The weight of the handheld is 227 grams. It is operated with a lithium-ion battery with 1300 mAh. According to Nintendo, the battery will last 3-5 hours when playing 3DS games and 5-8 hours when playing DS games. This information is based on the highest brightness level, since the 3D effect should be less visible or even no longer visible at a lower brightness level. The dimensions are 13.5 cm in length, 7.4 cm in width and 2 cm in height. According to the analysis service IHS iSuppli, the manufacturing costs for the hardware and the assembly are around 73 euros.

Furthermore, 3D photos and sound recordings can be created, the latter can also be used for other purposes via SD card. Since the firmware update to version 3.0.0 (December 7th, 2011) it is possible to record and view 3D videos.

With the help of the six enclosed AR cards, special functions can be used in games and applications that support them. For example, animals from Nintendogs + Cats appear virtually on these cardboard cards with equipment from these characters. At the same time, photos can be taken and voice commands such as animal tricks can be shown.

Circle Pad Pro

3DS with Circle Pad Pro

On September 13, 2011, Nintendo President, Satoru Iwata , announced a second slide pad for the 3DS. This will be available as an optional accessory and will offer improvements in the controls for some games. The so-called Circle Pad Pro appeared in Germany on January 27, 2012. The first game it supports is Resident Evil: Revelations .

The Circle Pad Pro is an additional peripheral into which the 3DS is placed. On the right side, the Circle Pad Pro adds a second analog stick. The peripherals also add two more shoulder buttons to the 3DS system. The Circle Pad Pro is powered by its own battery and communicates with the 3DS via infrared. An adapted version of the Circle Pad Pro has been available for the 3DS XL since March 2013.

Street and SpotPass

StreetPass is a way of exchanging data (e.g. game items) with other users. During the transfer, the Mii is also transferred, which can then be viewed in a specific application, the StreetPass Mii lobby . In this way you can z. B. Swap puzzle pieces that you would otherwise have to buy for game coins. StreetPass also supports various other 3DS games such as: B. Mario Kart 7 , Animal Crossing: New Leaf or Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS . The transmission time is between approx. Two seconds and three minutes.

With SpotPass, the system automatically connects to the Internet, e.g. B. Download videos or messages. In addition, it is possible for selected software titles to receive additional content and appropriate messages free of charge via SpotPass, even if the respective 3DS memory card (game module) is not inserted or started.

Game coins

With the help of the pedometer, a virtual game coin is added to the player for every 100 steps taken. These game coins can be used for various software titles, such as the StreetPass Mii lobby , Nintendo mailbox , or Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer.

The number of game coins that can be received in a day is limited to 10. You can own a maximum of 300 game coins.

NFC

NFC reader / writer

The New Nintendo 3DS or New Nintendo 2DS XL and New Nintendo 3DS XL have an NFC module ex works . An NFC reader / writer has been available for the older models since autumn 2015. The module is mainly used for Amiibo support.

software

Like other Nintendo consoles, the Nintendo 3DS is backwards compatible . For example, Nintendo DS games can also be played on the 3DS. It is also possible to transfer DSiWare titles that have already been purchased from a Nintendo DSi to the 3DS. So no new purchase is necessary. Like the Wii, the new handheld also contains its own version of the Virtual Console . Selected Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles, as well as NES titles, can be downloaded and played in the online library . Individual games are processed and support the 3D effect.

On June 7, 2011, Nintendo 3DS also got a NetFront web browser and access to the eShop for game downloads. Due to technical problems, the eShop could not be available for the release of the console as originally planned. In contrast to the game download centers for Wii and DSi, no Nintendo Points Card can be used for payment; instead, the payment method is the credit card. It was announced for the end of June 2011 that eShop prepaid cards will also appear in stores; on June 29, 2011, however, it became known that their publication would be postponed again until mid / end of July 2011. On this date, Nintendo released two different cards with the values 15 and 25 €.

Software purchased in the eShop is automatically installed on the connected SD card or, in the case of DSiWare, in the system's internal memory. Storage space is specified in "blocks" in the user interface of the 3DS, a "block" corresponds to 128 kilobytes . While Virtual Console and Nintendo 3DS download software can only be saved on the SD card, DSiWare can be moved freely between the SD card and internal storage via the menu item "Data Management" in the system settings. Data created by the software such as B. memory statuses or the relative position of the icon in the "Home" menu are moved with it. However, it is not possible to start DSiWare stored on an SD card.

A system update on December 7th, 2011 added a video recording function to the 3DS. This allows the user to record 10-minute 2D and 3D videos and create stop-motion films. Since December 15, 2011, the Eurosport video player can be downloaded free of charge from the Nintendo eShop . This video player allows the user to watch 3D sports videos. The offer was updated every week, but support for the application has now been discontinued and no new videos are published. Users of this application can download it again, but it no longer appears in the e-shop.

On December 21, 2011, the Nintendo mailbox appeared in the Nintendo eShop. The Nintendo Mailbox enables users to send letters to their friends (who are on the Nintendo 3DS Friends List). The letters are handwritten using the touchscreen and sent and received via StreetPass. If you send letters several times, you activate new functions, such as B. 3D writing, new stationery and inserting photos. Additional stationery, as well as the option of inserting audio recordings of up to 5 seconds, can be unlocked using game coins. Until November 1, 2013, the messages could also be sent via SpotPass (Internet). This option was discontinued by Nintendo because the software was sometimes used by minors to exchange inappropriate material. In addition, friend codes are said to have been exchanged in forums for this purpose.

Version 4.0.0-7E was released on April 25, 2012. With this it is possible to create folders for your software titles and arrange them as you wish. Game patches are also now supported. An update for Mario Kart 7 has been made available, which fixes bugs that allow unfair route shortcuts in online mode. In addition, the design of the eShop was made more user-friendly.

The device has a 4.88  "  / 12.39 cm (3DS: 3.53" / 8.97 cm) top and 4.18 "/ 10.61 cm (3DS: 3.00" / 7, 62 cm) large lower screen. The capacity of the supplied memory card is now four gigabytes instead of two.

The 3DS XL first appeared in Europe on July 28, 2012 in the colors silver, blue and red and was only offered without a charger (the chargers from 3DS, DSi XL and DSi are compatible). Nintendo 2DS

On August 28, 2013, Nintendo announced another model, the Nintendo 2DS. New Nintendo 3DS
New Nintendo 3DS XL

In the course of an Internet conference on August 29, 2014, two new models of the 3DS and 3DS XL were announced. It is basically a technical improvement of the two models already on the market. The New 3DS and New 3DS XL have two new shoulder buttons labeled ZR and ZL as well as a C-Stick. This can be used in games such as the Circle-Pad Pro , but its functionality differs from a sliding pad / analog stick , as it cannot be moved. Instead, the C-Stick can be tilted slightly in different directions, similar to a trackpoint . Also included is an NFC chip for the amiibo figures.

The New models also contain a more powerful processor, which should run more complex games and applications, and the browser has HTML5 support. The size of the screens of the New 3DS XL compared to the 3DS XL has not changed; however, the screens on the New 3DS have gotten a little bigger. Consoles are getting upgraded batteries that are said to last up to seven hours when using 3DS games, and microSD cards are now used for storage. In addition, the 3D effect has been improved, the front camera now records the player's face and aligns the 3D effect accordingly: This means that you can now see a clear 3D image even if you look at the device at an angle. There have also been exclusive titles for the New 3DS, New 3DS XL and New 2DS XL. Xenoblade Chronicles is the first exclusive New 3DS game. There are also exclusive virtual console games for the New 3DS models.
