Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon is the first game in the Ghost Recon series to be released for Windows , Mac OS , Xbox , PlayStation 2 and GameCube in late 2001. The game was developed by Red Storm Entertainment. It contains many elements from the older and comparable Rainbow Six series , but Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon was not considered a successor from the start, but a completely new game. For example, more emphasis was placed on action, which can be seen in the lack of operational planning before a mission, as is common in most games in the Rainbow Six series.

Gameplay

Since Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon is a tactical shooter, the character is controlled from the first-person view. Before a mission, the player puts together his team, with the option of automatic assignment. The teams are divided into three sub-teams - Alpha, Bravo, Charlie (Team Charlie is not included in the PS2 and Xbox versions). A sub-team can fit a maximum of three people, although it should be noted that you cannot take more than six people with you on a mission.

The game characters are divided into two platoons: standard soldiers and specialists. Twelve of the former are available at the beginning of the campaign, the twelve specialists can be unlocked in the missions by fulfilling optional goals (for example completing a mission without losing your own). For each completed mission, the participating soldiers receive one talent point, which can be used to improve target accuracy, camouflage, endurance and leadership quality. The soldiers on both platoons are divided into four classes:

  1. Shooter: The shooter represents the standard soldier and thus the backbone of the team. Usually he is armed with an assault rifle , whereby a grenade launcher can also be carried.
  2. Machine gunner: The machine gunner specializes in the use of heavy weapons and is armed with a light machine gun.
  3. Sniper: The sniper specializes in long-range combat and is equipped with a sniper rifle with a telescopic sight. He also wears a " ghillie suit ", which allows perfect camouflage.
  4. Explosives expert: The explosives master is responsible for attaching explosive charges, and he can also be equipped with an anti-tank rocket launcher. His main weapon is a carbine , which makes him better suited for close combat than the shooter.

Specialists: The unlockable specialists are not only better trained than the standard soldiers, they also have better weapons, for example the experimental XM-29 OICW assault rifle. There are also specialists from NATO countries allied with the USA, for example British SAS soldiers and German paratroopers , who are expanding the range of weapons.

A mission consists of an extensive, freely accessible map. Depending on the game mode, you have to complete given tasks on this map (campaign / mission), kill all opponents (battle) or fight your way from one point to another (reconnaissance). You and your team carry out missions on foot, but occasionally you also get help from armored troops, helicopters and supporting air strikes.

In the current game, the player has a certain control over his fellow combatants with the help of a mission card (or keyboard commands) and thus influences the rules for the combat mission, i.e. H. you can determine where and how the units should move and behave in combat (cautious to aggressive). In addition, you have the option of controlling each team member yourself, which is usually necessary to successfully master the missions - but delegating certain tasks to the AI is sometimes necessary, which underlines the tactical character of the game.

Arsenal of weapons

Ghost Recon has an arsenal of the most modern infantry weapons and high-tech equipment:

campaign

The first part takes place in 2008 on the territory in the states of the former Soviet Union . Radical ultra-nationalists have gained influence in Moscow and are trying to rebuild the collapsed Russian empire. One after the other, Ukraine , Belarus and Kazakhstan are falling back into their old structures, the Russian tanks are ready to advance further west and south. After the western world does not react, the Ghosts are dispatched to secretly fight and contain the Russian threat.

The campaign, comprising 15 missions, can be divided into three sub-campaigns:

Caucasus

At the beginning of the campaign, the Ghost team supports the UN peacekeeping troops in Georgia in the fight against pro-Russian rebels in the autonomous region of South Ossetia . The ultra-nationalist government in Moscow takes advantage of the supposed provocation and lets its troops march into Georgia. In view of the Russian superiority, the UN troops and with them the Ghosts have to withdraw.

This part of the campaign includes missions one through five. The tasks range from digging a rebel camp to rescuing two F / A-18 pilots who have been shot down and evacuating the Georgian capital Tbilisi .

Baltic states

After the Georgia campaign is over, the Ghosts will be sent to the Baltic States , which are also occupied by the Russians , to help prepare the invasion of the US-led forces.

The second part of the campaign includes missions six through ten. First, the Ghosts operate behind enemy lines to get important information or to blow up a bridge. After the invasion, the Ghosts support the US-led armed forces in order to drive the Russians out of the Baltic States and to recapture the completely destroyed Lithuanian capital Vilna .

Russia

After the victory over the Russians in Lithuania, the Ghosts are sent to Russia on a series of covert operations to further weaken the ultra-nationalists and to end the civil war that has broken out as soon as possible.

The final part of the campaign begins with a series of night raids on ultra-nationalist-held military bases in Russia, including a submarine base in Murmansk and an airport in Arkhangelsk . The final showdown takes place in Moscow , where the Ghosts recapture Red Square from the ultra-nationalists.

Add-ons

A total of three add-ons for Ghost Recon were released . The first, Ghost Recon: Desert Siege , was released in 2001 for Windows only. It includes a new campaign with eight missions, new multiplayer maps, new weapons and other extras.

In 2002, Ghost Recon: Island Thunder was the second add-on. It was released for Windows and Xbox and, like the first add-on, contains a new campaign with eight missions, new maps and weapons. The Xbox version, which was sold as a standalone game, also includes some multiplayer cards from the Desert Siege add-on.

The third add-on was Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm in 2004 . It was sold as a standalone game for PS2 and N-Gage and, in addition to the Island Thunder campaign, contains eight other missions and new multiplayer maps.

Desert victories

In 2009 the Ghosts are sent to Eritrea, which is attacked by an Ethiopian warlord named Tesfaye Wolde. Armed with Russian weapons, Wolde forced the Eritrean armed forces to withdraw quickly, thereby hindering shipping on the Red Sea. The government of Eritrea then asked the international community for help, whereupon an international coalition was formed. The Ghosts are used as a spearhead and are intended to support the multinational armed forces in repelling the invading forces.

In addition to eight new missions, Desert Siege includes some new multiplayer maps and weapons (9A91, AN-94 , PP-19 Bizon , FN FAL , OZ-14 Grosa , M60 machine gun , Barrett M98 , PKM , PSG1 and RPG-7 ).

Iceland Thunder

In 2010, after Fidel Castro's fictional death in 2006, the first free elections are due in Cuba. However, a radical rebel group is trying to sabotage them. The Ghosts operate as part of the UN blue helmets to ensure that the elections run smoothly and to crush the rebel group.

Ghost Recon 2

Released in 2004 for the Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube. The story of Ghost Recon 2 is different between Xbox and PS2. A publication of Ghost Recon 2 on the PC was not implemented.

action

While the Ghosts on the Xbox in North Korea are looking for the fanatical General Jung, who took power after the collapse of the government and threatens to plunge the world into a nuclear conflict, the Ghosts on the PS2 become a disruption of mobility behind the lines of North Korea and functionality of the military used. The story on PS2 is close to that of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory . In 2007, following a missile attack on the USS Clarence E. Walsh, the Ghost operate behind enemy lines and have historically had to crack down on the North Koreans' nuclear weapons program.

Add-on

In 2005, Ghost Recon 2: Summit Strike was released as a standalone add-on for the Xbox.

In 2012, Kazakhstan is falling into chaos. The Kazakh President and his Security Council die in a bomb attack by the notorious Pakistani warlord and arms dealer Aamir Rahil. As a result of the chaos and with the help of the corrupt military, Rahil consolidates his power. The Ghosts are sent to support the attack by the UN ground forces and capture Rahil. With the help of their Kazakh contact man, Grigory Koslov, the Ghost follow Rahil's troops from the mountains in the south to the dry wasteland of the steppe landscape.

A version was also released for the PlayStation Portable . In addition, GRAW is one of the first games to support the new PhysX processor (PPU) from Ageia .

action

In 2013, Mexican guerrillas launched a coup against the incumbent government in Mexico . For defense, the US Army uses the Integrated Warfighter System , which the Ghosts are also equipped with in order to defuse the situation. The IWS combines advanced weapon systems, the latest satellite communications and increased survivability. During this uprising, in which, among other things, the American embassy in Mexico City is destroyed, the unit is now being sent to the crisis area in order to free the Mexican and American presidents and to regain a secret communication device that fell into rebel hands.

Differences between the Windows version

According to publisher Ubisoft and Swedish developer GRIN, GRAW is not a console port for the PC. The version differs in level structure, mission design, weapon selection, controls, player view and multiplayer from the console version. The control of the teammates works differently and was generally perceived as more difficult. There is also no third-person perspective in the PC version and only a small selection of teammates who can be selected for support.

On March 8, 2007, Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 , GRAW 2 or GRAW 2 for short, was initially released for the Xbox 360. This game is noted for PlayStation 3 , PSP and Windows . In addition, the physical elements such as blast waves, the weapon arsenal, the graphics, the single player story and the online experience should ensure a never before experienced gaming experience. Like Advanced Warfighter , the Windows version was developed independently by the Swedish developer GRIN, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are again programmed by Ubisoft Paris and Red Storm. A single player demo for Xbox 360 has been available since January 31, 2007 and the multiplayer demo since February 26, 2007 and for Windows since June 7, 2007 on the associated homepage. As the first game in the series, each version received the rating no youth approval from the USK.

action

In 2013, just one day after the unit was last deployed, it returned to Mexico. A civil war between Mexican loyalists and insurgent rebels becomes a threat that needs to be fought off. But the rebels are initially underestimated. When it becomes clear that they have stolen some Soviet medium-range missiles and Ukrainian nuclear warheads, threatening the entire United States, a nerve-wracking race against time begins.

Changed gameplay (Windows)

In contrast to its predecessor, GRAW 2 offers improved game mechanics, based on the Diesel 7 engine developed by Grin. The game has been optimized for quad cores , PhysX cards and the Nvidia GeForce 8800 series of graphics cards . The physics and particle effects for realistic explosions, smoke and destruction of buildings as well as dynamic light and shadow effects for a day / night cycle have been improved. The artificial intelligence, team AI and the command control Cross-Com have also been improved . A new command overview allows the player to plan the tactical procedures in detail.

The supplies have also been changed. The Ghost have the mobile support vehicle MULE , from the Future Combat System of the US armed forces. It is available in many missions and can thus be used as mobile cover.

Changed gameplay (Xbox 360)

As with the PC, the console version has been improved in terms of game mechanics, based on the Unreal Engine. Physics and particle systems have been improved in order to represent explosions more realistically and increased artificial intelligence has been added. Real-time day / night cycles, a changing weather system and the mobile support vehicle MULE were also introduced. In addition, the team was expanded by one class. With the medic, it is possible to heal team leader Scott Mitchell and his team during the missions.

Combat areas

Compared to GRAW 1, the Ghosts are also fighting on US soil. In addition to mountainous terrain or barren deserts, cities such as El Paso (Texas) are also scenes.

criticism

According to the El Paso Times, Héctor Murguía Lardizábal, Mayor of the Mexican city of Juárez, is demanding that the game be banned. The game's scenes cast a bad light on your city and you fear negative economic effects. Furthermore, the game would unnecessarily increase tensions between Mexico and the United States.

Special multiplayer maps

The level Nowhere was so popular in Advanced Warfighter that in Part 2 the Ubisoft map is also offered for users with a free Ubisoft account. Another card is called the Embassy and already existed in Ghost Recon , the first part of the series. However, most of the houses there were destroyed or damaged. The Nachspiel card , on the other hand, is a popular setting for sniper games. In contrast to the other maps, almost every roof on the main road is accessible. In addition, since May 2007 a multiplayer map set with several multiplayer maps from Ghost Recon 2 and Ghost Recon 2: Summit Strike has been offered on the Xbox Live marketplace .
