Tactical shooters are computer games that mostly run in the first person perspective (rarely third person perspective ) and represent a sub-genre of shooters .

In contrast to classic first-person shooters, in which tactics and speed of reaction play an important role, the more realistic game mechanics in tactical shooters largely prevent the latter and focus on carefully planned tactical procedures. Tactical shooters are basically played in a team: While teams are formed from human players in multiplayer mode, team members are simulated by the computer ( bots ) in single player mode . The player usually takes on the position of the team leader who commands the computer-controlled team members.

Another common feature of tactical shooters is that they play in a realistic setting; weapons and units are usually true-to-detail implementations of real models, even if they do not necessarily have their names for licensing reasons. Police operations against hostage-takers or terrorists ( special unit ) or the various scenes of the Second World War are particularly popular as scenarios, but increasingly also fictitious conflicts in the present or the near future.

There are several team-based game modes in multiplayer . The objectives of the game are often to capture an object (e.g. a flag), free or hold hostages, or plant or disarm a bomb. Under the given conditions of the game, these goals can be achieved much more easily through coordinated teamwork. In contrast to the multiplayer modes in classic first -person shooters, in which the gameplay is often based on the deathmatch principle, tactical shooters are often turn-based. This means that after death a player cannot immediately re-enter the game ( respawn ), but has to wait until either the goal of the game has been achieved or one of the two teams has been completely eliminated. Then a new round is started again with all players in the starting position.

Tactical shooters offer a wide range of different focuses. Realism only plays a major role in a few, so that the main focus is on quick decisions and rationality and feeling are required. However, there are also tactical shooters that are kept so realistic that they are even used in a slightly expanded form as a training program in the military, such as the Virtual Battlefield System (VBS1) developed from Operation Flashpoint . The genre is therefore very diverse and offers many levels of definition.

Examples

The most prominent representative of the genre in multiplayer mode is Counter-Strike . Games with a world war scenario are for example Medal of Honor Allied Assault or the Battlefield series.
