World of Tanks (WoT) is a 2010 massively multiplayer online game by the Belarusian game developer Wargaming.net . It contains elements of a third-person and tactical shooter , with the characters being the eponymous tanks . World of Tanks is a free-to-play product in which the manufacturer generates several million euros in profit annually through microtransactions (as of 2016).

Game setup

The game world is designed in 3D graphics using the “core engine” developed in-house, and games are played with tanks in player-versus-player mode. Tank battles with models from the time of the Second World War are used as a template , with prototypes and post-war models (up to the beginning of the 1970s) also being used. According to Wargaming, the historical limit should be smoothbore cannons and electronic equipment.

Gameplay

In the game, battles are carried out in which two groups of players with usually 15 tanks each face each other. There are tanks in the categories of "light tanks", "medium tanks", "heavy tanks", "tank destroyers" and "self-propelled guns" (mobile artillery). The tanks are also divided into different performance levels from I to X and different nations. The composition of the teams is calculated on the server before the game starts (so-called matchmaking ), whereby categories, levels and nations are mixed. This means, for example, that British, Soviet and German tanks can be on the same team.

There are different maps to play on for the battles . The task in a battle is either to take the enemy base or a neutral base on the map or to destroy all enemy tanks. A battle usually lasts a few minutes, after 15 minutes and failure to meet the objectives, the game ends in a draw. As of version 7.4, there is not only the so-called random battle , in which each team tries to conquer the other's base or destroy all enemy tanks, but also the attack game mode , in which only one team has a base that it defends against the other team got to. In this mode the time limit is only 10 minutes. In addition, the game mode encounter battle was added, in which there is a neutral base that both teams have to conquer. From version 9.0 to 9.3 there was the battle type historical battles , in which the teams consist of vehicles from the same nation. The number and equipment of the vehicles should reflect the historical circumstances. This mode was removed due to lack of interest.

At the end of a battle, the player is credited with experience points , play money and bonds.

Game progress

For each nation represented in the game Great Britain , France , Germany , China , USSR , Czechoslovakia , Japan , Sweden , Italy , USA and Poland there is one starting tank available, from which you can earn further tanks of the nation. In addition, tanks from other nations are playable; a tank of the Swiss Army, the Panzer 58 Mutz , or a tank of the Hungarian Army, a prototype of the Turan tank , and also the Soviet T-55 A with the NVA emblem are in play.

Starting with the starting tank, the player can research and purchase equipment and other tanks by investing experience points and play money. Modules of a tank (turrets, engines, cannons, radios, chain drives) are assigned to a tank. The tanks themselves are hierarchically grouped within a nation in levels (referred to in the game with the English term Tier ) from I to X in such a way that (except for the starting tank) each tank has a subordinate predecessor and (except for the tanks of tier X) at least has a superior successor. In this way, there is a “research tree” for each nation. Each new tank must be researched using experience points that were earned with the directly subordinate tank. The same applies to modules that have to be unlocked within the respective tank through experience points. However, within a nation, some modules can also be used in other tanks. In addition, the tanks and modules must be paid for with play money, which is acquired in the game independently of the national research trees. In addition to the experience gained within a research tree, you receive 5% free experience (in the form of gold stars), which can be used universally.

You can also earn bonds through special achievements in combat or through participation in special actions and competitions. These enable the purchase of special equipment.

Every tank has crew members whose performance increases with experience points . As the crew gains experience, this affects the performance of the tank for which the respective crew member is responsible (reload speed, speed of aiming, visibility, acceleration, rate of turn, etc.). After reaching 100%, the player can assign a special skill to the crew members. There is a choice between the four general skills "improved camouflage", "faster repair", "faster fire extinguishing" and "brothers in arms" (causes increased values for all crew members as soon as all crew members have 100% "brothers in arms"), and others for the respective task of the crew member specific, skills. If a tank does not have a crew member for every role, e.g. no radio operator, another crew member can learn his specific skill. If a crew member has acquired 100% of a skill, the player can select another skill for this member, which is then also acquired. A fully trained crew would therefore have 100% performance in standard functions and 100% in all skills. However, since the amount of experience points required for this double with every 100% limit, a large number of games are required for this.

The experience required for an upgrade increases exponentially, as does the purchase price of the tanks.

Game flow

The tanks have up to seven slots (depending on level) three for additional equipment, three for consumables and one for directives. Equipment used may have some values of the vehicle, such as B. permanently increase the range of vision, camouflage or the reload speed, but also increase certain skills of the crew. Consumables are used for repairs, to extinguish a fire or to increase certain vehicle or crew values for a single battle. Depending on the type of vehicle, directives increase the values of the vehicle, improve the skills and benefits learned by the crew or temporarily unlock those that have not been learned. Accessory directives increase the bonus of built-in accessories.

If the player has researched all available research options for a tank model, including the tank immediately following in the research tree, the tank receives the status "Elite". From this point on, the player can either invest the experience gained with this tank in the accelerated training of the tank crew or, against payment of gold , convert it into free experience so that it can also be used for research on other tanks. If you opt for faster crew training, this accelerates by values between 17% (with six members) and 50% (with two members).

Vehicle balance

The vehicles in WoT are divided into five categories: light, medium and heavy tanks, tank destroyers and self-propelled guns (mobile artillery). Each category has certain typical advantages and disadvantages, which - to put it simply - are reflected in the four classic cornerstones of armor protection, armament, mobility and camouflage value. Not all tanks are typical of their category, however; there are heavy tanks that sacrifice armor for mobility, and medium tanks that are better armored and less mobile, etc. The balance between the classes is primarily based on the card design: depending on the card, a class is more or less useful; so is z. B. Artillery is most effective on large, open maps, while it is difficult to use in cities. Heavy tanks are most effective in cities. The range of cards is known, but you cannot choose the card (exception: clan war) and you do not know it before the start of the battle, so that when choosing a vehicle you never know which scenario you will play in.

The tasks of the light tanks on the battlefield include, with a few exceptions, the reconnaissance of the enemy and the destruction of the enemy self-propelled guns. Medium tanks are mostly suitable for bypassing heavy tanks or breaking through enemy lines and taking on the role of reconnaissance, and flank attacks with them are also very effective. Most heavy tanks act as frontal tanks, dueling each other in direct combat, while tank destroyers often influence combat from a greater distance. The self-propelled guns cover the enemy from a safe distance with long-range fire and, thanks to the shock effect, can enormously limit the mobility and efficiency of the vehicles.

Damage model

World of Tanks works with a multi-level damage model . Factors that are included in the calculation of the damage caused include the penetration power of the projectile, which decreases with a longer trajectory, the strength of the armor at the point of impact, and the angle of impact. For example, shots at an angle that is too shallow may ricochet without causing damage. Both the penetration power and the damage after successful penetration can deviate from an average value by up to 25%. It is also possible to destroy certain modules of the tank with targeted shots. Whether the module is damaged also depends on the simulated accident. For example, a hit in the chain drive wheel can temporarily immobilize the tank.

If a module of the tank is destroyed, it is temporarily repaired by the crew after a certain period of a few seconds. However, it then no longer shows its full potential. For a complete repair, consumables in battle are required (e.g. small or large spare parts box) with which one or more modules can be completely repaired. The same applies to the quick extinguishing of fires (use of the consumable “fire extinguisher”). In older versions, this was only possible once per battle, later it was possible to use the same consumable (selected before the battle) several times after a waiting period, as long as there was still a supply of consumable.

A hit can also injure or kill crew members. It is possible for the player to purchase first aid kits to immediately restore the operational readiness of the tank crew. If all crew members have been switched off, the vehicle is "out of action" and thus destroyed, which happens very rarely.

Player rating

Wargaming.net uses a scheme for the personal evaluation of a player's performance. The evaluation includes u. a. Number of battles conducted, victory rate, average damage generated, survival rate, average experience gained. The calculation formula is disclosed in the WoT Wiki. According to a general assessment, it takes into account parameters that make a statement about how valuable a player was to his team.

There is also a calculation developed by players that has its origins in the North American version of World of Tanks. This rating is called Wn8 and also tries to measure the observable contribution to combat. The calculation is based on an average player whose performance was determined using a larger database. The performance was set individually for each tank. Based on the average values that can be expected, the performance of a player with the tank he has just driven is evaluated and is included in the Wn8.

The personal rating or the Wn8 is not taken into account when putting together the teams for a battle. As a result, the opposing teams can be very unequal in player performance.

Clans and Bulwark

The game offers players the opportunity to join forces in clans . These clans can take parts of a playing card by winning battles against other clans. These games are called a bulwark , as the clan experience acquired in such games is used to build a virtual bulwark of the clan. The strategic approach of the clan commanders is carried out in the browser , only the battles themselves continue to take place via the game using skirmishes. The playable map currently includes Europe, parts of western Russia, the Caucasus, large areas of the Middle East and North and West Africa.

As a result, clans have the opportunity to enter into alliances with other clans. By conquering provinces on the Clan Wars map, the clan receives income in the form of gold .

Group play options

Up to three players can temporarily form a "platoon". You then fight together on the same team. In addition to Bulwark games, this is another way to play in groups.

In addition, you can spontaneously create a so-called "dynamic train" with other players during a random battle. This means that you can invite up to two other players to a platoon during the battle.

Modding

In the game, the appearance and parts of the game mechanics can be changed by modding ; additional evaluations by mod are also possible.

Free-to-play concept

World of Tanks is free-to-play , the implementation of the game content for sale has been discussed and criticized in public several times. ( See also : Lootbox , section criticism )

Partnership with Sabaton

Wargaming.net and World of Tanks have been working together with the Swedish metal band Sabaton since August 2017 . Together with the German director Zoran Bihać , the partners shot a video in the style of World of Tanks for Sabaton's song Primo Victoria . The video was filmed in the Swedish tank museum Arsenalen. WoT players have been able to drive the “Primo Victoria” tank since 2017, which is based on the Swedish Strv 81 and bears the Sabaton logo. The crew of the tank is designed according to the band members and the voice recordings for the tank come from singer Joakim Brodén . In addition, Sabaton emblems and labels for the tanks of the WoT players can be purchased.

Worldwide

Started as a European game, World of Tanks has had a Japanese version since September 2013. A cooperation with the anime series Girls und Panzer was entered into for marketing purposes . For the Japanese version, six “Voice Packs” were created with the voices of six characters from Girls and Panzer , as well as an “Expansion Pack” with adaptation of the tank and figure graphics to those used in the series. World of Tanks is also present in North America. Wargaming.net operates separate server groups for Europe, Japan and North America, between which players can switch.

Wargaming.net League and World of Tanks Grand Finals

In February 2013, Wargaming.net announced the introduction of a "Wargaming.net League" - an in-house league for the games of the Belarusian company. This is intended to establish an establishment in the e-sports market (electronic sports).

In the first season, players had to prove themselves in three seasons and qualify for a final: the “Grand Finals”, in which 14 teams made it. The first Grand Finals were held from April 4th to 6th, 2014 at Zlote Tarasy in Warsaw (Poland). Razer (computer peripherals), Alienware (PC manufacturer) and PayPal (micropayment) were presented as supporters (sponsors) of the competition. The NaVi team was able to prevail against the eSports clan Virtus.pro and received, in addition to the world championship title, prize money of 110,000 US dollars. In 2018, Wargaming decided to abolish the WGL (Wargaming League) due to low audience numbers.
