Wargaming.net is a White Russian game developer with headquarters in Nicosia , Cyprus . While the studio developed turn-based strategy games for a long time , the big breakthrough came in 2010 with the historic tank simulation World of Tanks .

history

Wargaming.net was founded in 1998 by a group of fans of military strategy . The studio became known from 2003 for its Massive Assault series, a series of turn-based strategy games in a science fiction scenario and based on the system of tabletop games. After the success of the Massive Assault series, Wargaming released the Order of War game in 2009 , a real-time strategy game set in the scenario of World War II . While Order of War was very successful and firmly established Wargaming.net in the genre, the development of World of Tanks began . Originally conceived as a niche title for fans of historic tank battles, World of Tanks developed into the studio's flagship game after its release in Russia in 2010 and internationally in 2011. After the enormous success of World of Tanks, which by its own account (as of January 2017) has over 100 million registered players, Wargaming.net launched the sister games World of Warplanes (historical flight simulation) in 2013 and World of Battleships (historical naval warfare simulation , later renamed) in World of Warships ).

In 2011 Wargaming.net opened offices in Paris and San Francisco . In August 2012, Wargaming.net bought the Australian software company BigWorld , which develops the BigWorld engine used in the Wargaming games, for $ 45 million. Another office in Seoul opened in 2012 in order to strengthen the presence on the Asian market in cooperation with the new partner SEA Gaming . Future plans are to combine the three World of Games to deliver "the ultimate gaming experience for war gamers around the world".

In February 2013, Wargaming.net bought the financially ailing studio Gas Powered Games (including the Dungeon Siege series). In August 2013, the company announced in a press conference that the rights for Total Annihilation and Master of Weapon of Atari were acquired.
