Gas Powered Games , Wargaming Seattle since 2013 , was an American video game development studio based in Redmond (Washington) . The studio was founded in 1998 by Chris Taylor , the spiritual father of Total Annihilation . After the development studio Cavedog Entertainment was closed in 2000, other developers followed Chris Taylor to Gas Powered Games. In 2013 the studio was taken over by Wargaming.net and renamed. The closure took place in May 2018.
history
The first title of Gas Powered Games was the quite successful role-playing game Dungeon Siege , which has since been continued with an add-on and a sequel title, also with an add-on. In 2007, the studio released Supreme Commander , an unofficial sequel to Total Annihilation , which, however, had a new background story and various other innovations, since Atari SA owned the rights to Total Annihilation at that time . Even so, Supreme Commander became a resounding success and was received with raptures by both critics and gamers. One add-on, Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance , was released in November 2007 and another planned add-on was announced but not completed. Instead, Gas Powered Games and Chris Taylor announced Supreme Commander 2 at E3 2009 . At gamescom '09, the first “pre-alpha version” was presented, which fans could then test for themselves. In the USA, Supreme Commander 2 was released on March 2, 2010, the European release was scheduled for March 5, 2010, on that day only the PC version was released, the Xbox 360 version only followed a few weeks later.
In contrast to previous titles, the third-person shooter Space Siege (published on August 22, 2008) received rather poor ratings in the games magazine tests. ( PC Games editorial team: 64%, PCGames community: 58%, 4Players editorial team: 45%)
Until the beginning of 2013 Gas Powered Games worked for Microsoft on the browser game Age of Empires Online .
On January 14, 2013, Gas Powered Games launched a Kickstarter campaign for the real-time strategy / action-RPG hybrid title Wildman . Shortly afterwards, the company laid off all employees with a few exceptions due to liquidity problems. Taylor said they had invested their entire fortune in developing the game and that the company's survival now depended on Wildman's success. On February 12, Gas Powered Games halted the Kickstarter campaign, which was just $ 504,120, less than half of its target of $ 1.1 million. Taylor said they wanted to focus on other ways to save the company. A little later it became known that the Belarusian developer Wargaming.net ( World of Tanks ) would take over Gas Powered Games. The studio was then renamed Wargaming Seattle. In May 2018 the studio was closed and all 150 employees were laid off. Founder Chris Taylor left the company in 2016. Most recently, Wargaming Seattle worked on an unannounced MMO project.
