The medium tank 1958 (MPz 58) was a battle tank used in small numbers by the Swiss Army .

history

After Switzerland was previously only equipped with foreign-made combat vehicles, e.g. B. Panzerjäger G13 , funds were granted in 1953 for the development of its own battle tank. The first prototype was completed in 1957 and was designated as Panzer 58. The main armament was a 90 mm cannon. A second prototype carried an English 20 pounder (83.4 mm) cannon. Another ten prototypes with a 105-mm cannon were made between 1960 and 1961.

technical description

The construction of the tank is conventional with a driver in the front, the fighting compartment in the middle and the engine with drive and steering gear in the rear.

The drive unit has a compact design and can be removed and installed as a whole. It consists of a motor, auxiliary motor, drive and steering gear, auxiliary gear and radiator. The auxiliary engine is a 4-cylinder in-line diesel engine and was used to drive the main generator, i.e. the power supply. In emergencies, the main engine could be started with the auxiliary engine via the auxiliary gearbox or the tank could be moved over short distances. The transmission is a power shiftable multi-plate clutch transmission with six forward and two reverse gears. Steering is done with a steering wheel. The foot and parking brake consist of two band brakes that are flanged to the left and right of the gearbox. The turret is built into the middle of the tank and cast from alloyed armored steel.

The commander and gunner sit on the right, the loader on the left in the turret. The driver sits in the front center of the tub front.

use

The medium tank 1958 formed a valuable basis for the later Panzer 61 . Between 1958 and 1964, all twelve prototypes were in military use. Then they were converted and used as target tanks 61 (moving hard target ).

The prototype with the M number M0895 is in the Thun Tank Museum , which is also the last remaining tank in 1958.
