The Panzer 61 was developed in Switzerland in 1961 procured armor of the Swiss army . It was based on findings made with the medium tank in 1958 . 150 pieces were produced in the Swiss construction workshop in Thun and introduced to the troops from 1964.

The crew consisted of the commander, judge , loader and driver. The armament consisted of a 10.5 cm tank cannon ( Royal Ordnance L7 ), a barrel-parallel 20 mm machine cannon ( later replaced by a second machine gun), a 7.5 mm flab machine gun ( Mg 51 ) and six Fog throwers . 52 grenades were carried for the main weapon, 240 cartridges for the automatic cannon, 3200 GP 11 cartridges for the machine gun and 16 cartridges for the Nebelwerfer. The Panzer 61 enabled the development of the Panzer 68 .
