overview

The M98 is a light sniper rifle designed as the main weapon for both military and police snipers. Due to the ammunition used , it fills the gap between the traditional 7.62 × 51 mm NATO and 12.7 × 99 mm NATO calibers. The M98 is very similar to classic, manually reloadable straight-pull rifles. The frame of the rifle is relatively heavy compared to the rest of the weapon, but is still lighter than the body of a similarly sized rifle. The barrel and frame are both attached to a lightweight aluminum structure for maximum flexural rigidity and the handle is made of fiberglass reinforced plastic to further reduce overall weight.

The gas system is housed separately from the barrel in the handle to keep the barrel vibration away. The gas is fed from the handle via a pipe through the rifle to the firing mechanism. This separation increases the accuracy. The recoil is largely absorbed by the gas system and an additional, highly efficient muzzle brake . The rifle is also equipped with a standardized Picatinny rail .
