Lists on the subject |
The .338 Lapua Magnum is a cartridge designed primarily for use in military sniper rifles . The designation is based on the 0.338 inch ( .338 ) caliber used , the Norwegian company Lapua , which did the main development, and Magnum as an indicator of a reinforced load. The metric caliber designation is 8.6 × 70 mm .
history
In the early 1980s, NATO required a high-performance sniper cartridge for combat ranges beyond that of the introduced 7.62 × 51 mm NATO or .300 Winchester Magnum . The cartridge is based on the .416 Rigby , whose case was retracted to the caliber .338 (8.59 mm). However, tests showed that gas pressure peaks put too much strain on the sleeve.
The Lapua company redesigned the case in 1987 with the CIP dimensions that are valid today , with deviations from the .416 Rigby, particularly in the base area. The .338 Lapua Magnum was also able to establish itself in long range shooting and - to a modest extent - as a big game caliber.
The projectile is characterized by a ballistic coefficient more than twice as high of around 0.65-0.77 (.416 Rigby 0.25-0.3), which minimizes deflection by wind and air resistance. As a result, a comparatively small scatter circle is achieved over very long distances.
With this caliber, the second-largest confirmed kill in a war effort was achieved in 2009, when the British sniper Craig Harrison killed two Taliban machine guns with one shot each over a distance of almost 2.5 kilometers.
