The Savage Arms Company is a United States- based arms manufacturing company known for its revolvers , pistols , rifles , shotguns, and carbines . The company was founded in Utica in 1894 by Kingston , Jamaica- born Arthur William Savage, but is now based in Westfield . Savage Arms is responsible for the development of several types of cartridges , including the .300 Savage , from which the .308 Winchester was later developed. Savage Arms is now owned by Vista Outdoor .

The company was founded in Utica in 1894 by Arthur Savage. A year later, the Savage Model 95 came on the market, the first hammerless lever action rifle. A removable magazine was developed for the successor, the Model 99 . Within 20 years, we expanded the range to include hand and handguns , including pistols, rifles, shotguns and carbines. In the pre-war period, the company developed a self-loading pistol, the Model 1907 . During the World Wars, Savage Arms produced for the American military . During the First World War , the Lewis machine gun in particular was produced in large numbers; Savage Arms merged with the Driggs-Seabury Ordnance Company for this purpose , and in 1920 Stevens Arms was also bought up. During the Second World War , the company was the single most important manufacturer of the Thompson submachine gun . After the war, consumer goods were also produced, including the first motorized lawn mower.
In the post-war period, the company belonged to different owners and finally fell into a crisis that resulted in bankruptcy in 1988. The company was then continued with a greatly reduced product range. In the 1990s, the company recovered and eventually became a major arms manufacturer again. The product range also grew again and today includes different types of firearms. In addition, Savage Arms has built a reputation as a maker of affordable, reliable weapons. In 2002 the company developed the AccuTrigger , a safe, adjustable trigger. Because of this development, Savage Arms was awarded Manufacturer of the Year by the Shooting Industry Academy of Excellence in 2003. The Savage 12BVSS , which is equipped with the AccuTrigger as standard , was named Rifle of the Year .

Savage Arms has another manufacturing facility in Lakefield, Canada, where only .22 lr rifles are manufactured.
Products
Savage Arms manufactures a number of different firearms, including pistols, rifles, and shotguns. The best known are the Model 99 and Model 10 rifles . The company also produces clothing for outdoor activities and accessories. With an annual production of approx. 400,000 rifles, Savage Arms is currently the world's largest manufacturer of bolt-action rifles. The .22lr caliber sport rifles in particular are commercially successful and popular with customers.
