The Savage Model 1907 is an early American self-loading pistol .

History and commitment

The basis of the pistol was a design presented by the Savage Arms Company in 1905 for a tender for the United States Army's new service pistol in .45 ACP . However, the decision of the American military fell on the Colt M1911 , which means that the Savage model in that form was not produced in series.

Instead, it was brought out in a scaled-down form as a pocket pistol and was intended more for civilian purposes. The edges were rounded, the cockspur protruded only a little for better concealed carrying. The weapon was of little military importance. Officially, it was only introduced in Portugal , with France also occupying a larger post during the First World War . However, this was only a bridging solution, as other manufacturers could not deliver in sufficient quantities. The total circulation of all copies made was around 200,000 pieces.

technology

The function of the weapon is quite unusual. The barrel is rotatably mounted in the frame, it is connected to the lock via a curved link that releases it as soon as the barrel has rotated 5 °. When firing, the bullet is accelerated in the barrel and set in rotation by the pulls , which means that it exerts a force on the barrel that acts in the opposite direction of rotation due to its inertia . This force brakes the barrel in its rotation and thus delays the shot in its return.

The effectiveness of this mechanism is questionable. Due to the low torque that the relatively light ball exerts on the barrel surrounding it, it was argued that the retarding effect of the system is negligible in relation to the inertial mass of the breech. In itself, this technology does not represent an unlocked ground lock, but by no means a rigid lock, rather it could be described as a delayed ground lock .

The 7.65 caliber Savage pistols have a double-row magazine , one of the first removable magazines of its kind.
