Long range shooting
Long Range Shooting refers to sporty rifle shooting at great distances.
The competition distances range up to 1,000 yards (915 meters) or 1,000 meters. This shooting sport is not offered in Germany, the greatest distance is 300 m.
With long range shooting, the shooter has to calculate complex ballistics , especially taking into account wind, temperature, air pressure, humidity, compensation of the earth's rotation (Coriolis force) and mirage (mirage). When aiming at distances of 50 to 100 m, the sight normally only needs to be adjusted in relation to constant gravity. At longer distances, however, the wind drift becomes an essential factor. Some shooters say that long-range shooting begins when the assessment of various atmospheric conditions is just as important to the results as the pure shooting skills. This means that even a technically perfect shot in long-range shooting can miss the target due to incorrect or incomplete ballistic calculations.
The distances, which are usually considered long range, depend on the caliber. Long range can be defined as the distance at which the firearm and ammunition are still able to take consistent hits. For the small caliber cartridge .22 lfB , distances of over 100 meters can be considered a long range. For medium calibers, the long-range range is over 300 to 400 m. Another definition describes all shooting distances from 500 m as long range.
Large-caliber precision rifles and ammunition that have been precisely tailored to the requirements are often used . Find use z. B. the calibers 6 mm PPC / 6 mm BR , 6.5 × 55 mm , .308 Winchester , .300 Winchester Magnum , .338 Lapua Magnum , .338 Little Dave 8.5 × 55 mm. The cartridges are usually loaded by themselves for reasons of precision .
Another sport that is shot at great distances is bench rest shooting , in which the rifle is shot at the front and rear.
