Barrett Firearms Manufacturing, Inc. is an American weapons manufacturer known for its large-caliber .50 BMG weapons . The company founded by Ronnie Barrett in 1982 is headquartered in Murfreesboro ( Tennessee ), or more precisely in the adjacent unincorporated area of Christiana.
The first and best-known rifle from Barrett was the M82A1 "Barrett Light Fifty", which was used in various armies, u. a. in the Bundeswehr (G82) and the US Army (M107), is used. It is a heavy, semi-automatic precision rifle that can effectively attack lightly armored targets (e.g. vehicles, aircraft, radar antennas) even at distances over 1,000 m. Due to the large caliber, these weapons opened up new areas of application that were previously not or only rarely considered.
Another product is the Barrett REC7 . This is a conversion kit for the M4 in the new 6.8 mm Remington SPC caliber . The aim of this further development is to increase performance in terms of range, penetration power and man-stopping effect compared to the usual caliber 5.56 × 45 mm NATO . In addition, an indirect gas tapping system increases the reliability of the gas -operated assault rifle compared to the M16 or M4, which use direct gas tapping.
Caliber .416
The caliber .416 10.6 × 83 mm Barrett is a center fire cartridge developed by this manufacturer, which is designed for long-range shots from precision rifles. The cartridge is an alternative to the .50 BMG caliber, which is banned for civilians in some countries such as Italy, Poland or the Netherlands and in some US states such as California. In Germany, the caliber is used for long-range sport shooters.
