Lists on the subject

The Barrett REC7 (REC stands for narrow. Reliability-enhanced carbine : " carbine with increased reliability") is an assault rifle company Barrett Firearms Manufacturing . It was developed as a possible replacement for the M16 and M4 assault rifles currently used as orderlies by the US armed forces .

development

The REC7 is not completely redeveloped, but Barrett uses the stock , trigger group and butt of the M4. It is also a further development of the Barrett M468 , which was developed after the XM8 project was canceled . The M468 still has a direct gas tap, as is the case with the M16 / M4 family, but is otherwise identical to the REC7. The REC7, designed as a gas pressure charger , no longer uses direct gas take-off, but a gas piston drive system similar to the system used in the HK G36 . Due to the indirect gas take-off, significantly less combustion residues and heat reach the cartridge chamber , which leads to less pollution, corrosion and heat generation. As a result of these circumstances, the reliability and safety of the weapon are increased overall, for example the probability of a cook-off occurring is reduced. For the conversion, the entire upper assembly of an M4, i.e. the breech , the barrel with the gas extraction system, the cartridge chamber, the handguard and the target optics can be exchanged for the corresponding assembly of the REC7. This would allow the US armed forces' current stock of M4 type assault rifles to be converted relatively easily. After the conversion, the rifle can fire the newly developed cartridge in the 6.8 mm Remington SPC caliber . Compared to the previously used caliber 5.56 × 45 mm NATO, their projectile achieves a greater man stopping effect in the target and, thanks to the greater speed, also a longer range.

Remarks

  1. For the two assemblies see p. 15 of the Operator's Manual ( Memento of April 14, 2010 in the Internet Archive ) (PDF; 2.4 MB). Figure 14. shows the assembly to be replaced.
