Lists on the subject

The Barrett Model 99 "Big Shot" is an anti-materiel rifle that has been manufactured by the US manufacturer Barrett Firearms Manufacturing, Inc. since 1999 . The M99 is intended as an inexpensive alternative to earlier Barrett precision rifles in .50 BMG caliber , such as the M82 and M95 .

Two versions were developed, the M99 and the M99-1. The M99 was developed as a precision rifle for operations with long shooting distances, in which a precise shot is far more important than the cadence . The M99-1 version was specially developed for urban combat, for example for targeted kills or to combat enemy snipers , where the distances are relatively short, but a powerful projectile is still required to penetrate body armor, for example. The model 99 is also available in two different calibers, .416 Barrett (10.5 × 83 mm) or .50 BMG, and in three different tube lengths.

technology

Due to the restriction to a cheaper alternative to the self-loading predecessors and the required high precision, the M99 is a single loader; ie after firing a shot, the breech is manually unlocked, pushed back, the case is ejected from the breech, a new cartridge is placed in the chamber by hand, the breech is closed and locked again.

The M99 rifle essentially consists of the barrel with housing, the base plate, the trigger, the breech and the bipod . The housing consists entirely of a drawn aluminum alloy. An M1913 rail is integrated on the housing so that a telescopic sight can be mounted. The rifle has no other aiming devices. The heavy barrel, which is manufactured with hydraulic presses, is fixed in the housing. After assembly, the barrel and the rail form a unit and are firmly connected to one another, so that heating of the barrel does not have any negative effects on target accuracy. A very effective muzzle brake is attached to the muzzle of the barrel , which was already used on the previous models M82 and M95. A tube is attached to the base plate, which is pushed into the housing from behind, in which the closure slides. However, it is locked in the rear end of the barrel via 15 locking lugs, which are arranged in three rows one behind the other. The closure is milled from one part. The moving parts in the breech are functionally the extractor and the ejector to eject the cartridge case and the firing pin to ignite the cartridges. The bipod is attached to the front end of the housing. The M99 can be dismantled without tools.
