Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell is a stealth shooter developed by Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Shanghai . It was published in 2002 by the parent company Ubisoft and represents the first part of the Splinter Cell series.

The game is about the agent Sam Fisher, who works for the fictional American secret service Third Echelon of the NSA . He sends him on various missions, mostly behind the enemy front. The focus of these missions is not so much on eliminating enemies as is common for shooters, but rather the unnoticed and silent procedure is the central element.

Splinter Cell is set in 2004 and in Asia, mainly in the Transcaucasus and Myanmar . It is about the fictional Georgian President Nikoladze, whose plan is to conquer neighboring Azerbaijan . Third Echelon, involved in the murder of two of their agents in Georgia, sends Fisher to prevent the planned attack.

The game received very good reviews due to its novel game principle. The average rating of all versions at Metacritic is about 90 out of 100 points.

In 2004, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow was a successor.

action

The action takes place in 2004. The CIA contacts NSA envoys because they have lost contact with one of their agents, Alison Madison. A second agent named Blaustein was smuggled into Tbilisi to re-establish contact with the recently disappeared Alison Madison. When he too disappears, Third Echelon sends secret agent Sam Fisher to the site to assess the situation and establish contact with the missing agent.

In the police station in Tbilisi, however, the bodies of the two agents are found. They had their implants removed. The evidence of the act leads to the Georgian Ministry of Defense. That's why Sam goes there immediately. There he learns that the new Georgian President Nikoladze is behind the whole thing. His plan is to take Azerbaijan by force of arms . The tracks lead Fisher to an oil rig in the Caspian Sea . There he has to pursue a technician who is in possession of an important computer that must not fall into Nikoladze's hands. Since Third Echelon evaluated this computer, they now know that there is a mole within the ranks of the CIA. Sam hacks the main CIA server and finds out that this mole's name is Mitchell Dougherty. He has to overpower Dougherty and bring him to his colleagues waiting for him outside. However, interrogations show that Dougherty only has a habit of storing important data on unprotected computers. Meanwhile, Grimsdottir tries to track down the location of the hacker attacks, but the attempt fails and she is discovered, but now the location of the attacks is known, a company building called Kalinatek. The terrorists in the Kalinatek building have now realized that their cover has been blown and are beginning to destroy evidence, which they include their computer technicians and hackers. One of these hackers is in possession of vital information. Sam has to find and interrogate him.

He then has to infiltrate the Chinese embassy in Burma because a Chinese general is suspected of being in league with Nikoladze. He overhears a conversation between himself and Nikoladze and learns that three captured American soldiers are to be executed in a slaughterhouse. Nikoladze and his men want to broadcast this execution worldwide. To prevent this, the transmitting antenna must be switched off and the soldiers released. During the mission, he comes across Chinese diplomats who tell him and Sam's staff that the Chinese general belongs to a faction and is not acting on behalf of the government . So Sam goes back to the embassy, but this time to capture the general and to find evidence of his stubborn behavior. The general commits suicide by ingesting poison. The last mission takes him back to Georgia , to the Georgian presidential palace. He has to capture Nikoladze, who has since lost all his power, and find the detonator of a portable atomic bomb . Nikoladze is already in Sam's hands, but he is freed again by a special unit. Sam kills the rest of the special forces soldiers and comes to a balcony. He sees Nikoladze's head and his only chance to end it is to kill him with an aimed headshot.

Gameplay

The game is a stealth shooter. Therefore, camouflage plays an important role. The prevailing lighting conditions are important for camouflage. The player has a display in his head-up display that shows him how visible the playing figure is to opponents. If he is in an unlit corner of a room, he is as good as invisible. If, on the other hand, he is near lamps, he can easily be seen by opponents. Therefore, the player always tries to keep the environment as dark as possible. Primarily, this is done by switching off light sources.

So that the player can find his way in the dark, he is equipped with a night vision device and a thermal imaging camera. Furthermore, since the missions depend on cunning and speed instead of brute force, he has a limited number of weapons. These primarily include silenced pistols, rifles and grenades. However, the ammunition that the player receives for the missions is very limited. He rarely has the opportunity to replenish his own ammunition stocks. As a result, the player is often forced to ambush melee attacks in order to incapacitate the opponent. The player can interrogate and search an incapacitated enemy or use it as a protective shield against enemy fire.

Development history

Splinter Cell was released in 2002 for the Xbox , in 2003 for the PC , PlayStation 2 , Nintendo GameCube , Game Boy Advance , the N-Gage , and in 2004 for the Macintosh . Overall, the game was sold six million times, according to Ubisoft. Since 2011, this part of the Splinter Cell series has also been available on the PlayStation 3 in the official PlayStation Store and as "Splinter Cell - Trilogy" with the two successors as a post-processed version in HD and 3D.

Splinter Cell is graphically based on a modified version of the Unreal Engine , which enables detailed shadows to be displayed. This gives the player the opportunity to avoid conflicts by using the shady sections of the level in order to achieve his objectives undetected.

The sockets for PC and Xbox and the socket for GameCube and PlayStation 2 differ slightly from each other. For GameCube and PlayStation 2, levels have been shortened and the level of difficulty has been lowered. A version of Splinter Cell was also released for the Nintendo GameBoy Advance and for mobile phones, which was held in 2D and did not contain the atmosphere of the original.

For the Xbox, three expansion levels were offered for free download via Xbox Live . The same levels were sold in stores for the PC titled Splinter Cell Mission Pack . With the appearance of the special edition of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory , which was not published in Germany , a patch in version 1.3 was made available to the public, which installs this level free of charge. The levels continue the storyline of the main game.

“Splinter Cell makes an exceptionally well thought-out impression. Hitman 2 is no competition in terms of atmosphere and variety, the almost three-year-old Dark Project 2 is similarly exciting, but technically completely out of date. "
