South Caucasus

South Caucasus (also Transcaucasia ( Russian Закавказье Sakawkasje )) denotes the part of the Caucasus south of the main chain of the Greater Caucasus .

Politically, the countries of Armenia , Georgia and Azerbaijan belong to the South Caucasus . Geographically, it covers most of the southern capping of the Greater Caucasus, the Colchian Plain , the Kura Aras Lowlands , the Lesser Caucasus , the Armenian Jawater Mountains , the Talysh Mountains and the Lenkoran Lowlands . As a political unit, the Transcaucasian Federation briefly existed in 1918 and the Transcaucasian SFSR within the Soviet Union between 1922 and 1936 .

Emigrants or refugees from these three countries are often referred to as Caucasians . In 1941 all Caucasian Germans from the countries of the South Caucasus were forcibly resettled to Kazakhstan .
