Tom Clancy's The Division is a loot shooter made by Ubisoft , which by Massive Entertainment and Red Storm Entertainment has been developed. The game was released on March 8, 2016 for Windows , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One . It is a third-person shooter with a progression system (officially referred to and marketed by Ubisoft as RPG adaptations ), which is set in an open world and whose elementary game mechanics are geared towards the acquisition of better weapons and equipment ( loot ).

action

In the United States , an epidemic known as the dollar flu breaks out from New York City . Many people are seriously ill and die as a result of the virus , and life in the city comes to a standstill after just a few days. There was a problematic domino effect beforehand . At first the infrastructure collapsed completely, the supply of food and other essential resources for survival was interrupted and total chaos broke out. The worst affected parts of the city have been completely cordoned off in order to isolate them (so-called dark zones ).

The Strategic Homeland Division ( The Division for short ) is then activated. It is a secret special unit of sleeper agents that becomes active when all other state facilities and measures fail and an at least partial state collapse occurs. Some of the agents of this unit are in the now almost deserted New York, where the anomie broke out. Your task is to prevent the ultimate downfall of society and restore order as much as possible. The division receives support only from the JTF, the Joint Task Force , in which the remains of the police, fire brigade and military personnel were organized.

In the course of the plot it becomes clear that various criminal groups want to seize the opportunity and pursue their own goals. This even includes some agents of the division who were activated in the first wave but later reneged and are now being hunted down and neutralized by agents of the second wave (like the player). It is also gradually being revealed how the virus came about and that certain forces apparently have an interest in allowing the situation to escalate in this way. At the same time, efforts are being made to develop an antidote, which Dr. Jessica Kandel succeeds, who had to find out that the virus was created artificially and that it was therefore bio-terrorism .

The game was first introduced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2013, where an approximately seven-minute gameplay demo was shown. The initial situation, the consequences of a devastating epidemic for modern society with its high division of labor and sensitive infrastructure, is based on an exercise by the US government in 2001, which was called Dark Winter .

The Division was initially developed exclusively for the 8th generation of consoles. However, Ubisoft later commented on the release of a PC version. The PC version was developed at the request of many players who submitted a petition and released at the same time as the console versions. As with other Ubisoft titles, Denuvo copy protection is used in the PC version. It was announced in advance that there would be exclusive content for the Xbox One version.

The game uses the newly developed Snowdrop engine, which is intended to improve the display of weather conditions (especially snow, hence the name) and a higher level of detail of the environment.

The game was supposed to support a connection between the main game and tablet - but this feature did not make it into the final version.

The DLC Underground , the first expansion for Tom Clancy's The Division , was released on June 28, 2016 for Xbox One and Windows PC. The DLC for the PlayStation 4 was released on August 2nd. The DLC Survival , the second expansion; was released on November 22, 2016 for Xbox One and Windows PC. For the PlayStation 4, the DLC was released on December 20th. Last Stand , the third expansion, was released on February 28, 2017 and simultaneously for Xbox One, Windows PC and PlayStation 4.

In addition to extensions, the developer Ubisoft has made updates available which, in addition to changes, also make some new content available free of charge.

The Division 2

On March 8, 2018, Ubisoft confirmed that Massive Entertainment was already working on the successor to Tom Clancy's The Division 2 and that a demo will take place at E3 2018. The sequel was finally released on March 15, 2019 for Windows, Xbox One and Playstation 4.

The Division 2 takes place seven months after the plot in the first part. At the end of the first part an antidote against the dollar flu could be developed, the state order still threatens to collapse due to the consequences of the epidemic. Division agents are now deployed in midsummer Washington, DC , which has also been hit hard by the virus outbreak and infrastructure breakdown. Criminal and terrorist groups operate in the capital, while the surviving civilians have largely been left to their own devices. As in New York, the JTF is still active here, and some civilians have joined forces in paved communities. In the background, largely unknown forces are still active, who want to use the collapse for their own purposes (such as the mysterious organization Black Tusk ).

Planned film version

At the end of April 2018, it was also confirmed that there should be a film about the game. Directed to David Leitch lead, starring Jake Gyllenhaal . The start of the film is planned for the end of 2019 / beginning of 2020.
