The Nintendo eShop (Japanese ニ ン テ ン ド ー e シ ョ ッ プ Nintendō e-Shoppu) is an online service for the 3DS , the Wii U and Switch from Nintendo , which is based on the Nintendo Network . It was released on June 6, 2011 in North America and on June 7 in Europe and Japan . On the Nintendo 3DS, the shop was activated with the firmware update to version 2.0.0-2E.

Nintendo eShop has been the online shop for Nintendo consoles since Nintendo 3DS. It offers both tailored 3DS and Wii-U titles, virtual console games, DSiWare, additional content, demo versions, trailers and screenshots and information about new releases. On the Wii U, the Nintendo eShop was added by the first software update for the console.

history

Starting with the Wii and later with the Nintendo DSi , Nintendo started a way to sell digital games to its customers. The Wii Shop Channel and the Nintendo DSi Shop were browser-based; Nintendo wanted to make this more customer-friendly with the 3DS, but the new shop was not yet completed when the Nintendo 3DS was released, so it was announced that the Nintendo eShop would be able to update the firmware at the end of May 2011. Nintendo postponed the update, which included the Nintendo eShop and the web browser , again to June 7, 2011. Since the press conference at E3 was also held on that day , the shop was presented there again.

In the beginning, the Nintendo eShop offered not only the large number of DSiWare but also a sparse number of games tailored for the Nintendo 3DS. However, some classics were also available, such as B. The Excitebike , which was available free of charge for a short time and was one of the first 3D Classics titles. Old classics such as The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, which was released for the Game Boy Color at the time, and the Pokédex 3D were also offered in the Nintendo eShop. Since the Nintendo eShop also offered the possibility to download the well-known DSiWare from the Nintendo DSi, Nintendo integrated the possibility of transferring its own DSiWare titles from the Nintendo DSi to the Nintendo 3DS with the 2.0.0-2 system update in June 2011.

In addition to Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, Game Gear and Nintendo entertainment system games also joined the Virtual Console program. In addition, Nintendo offered first-time buyers of the Nintendo 3DS, who had received it for 250 €, 20 games from the Virtual Console for free download; these people were called "Nintendo 3DS ambassadors". As part of the so-called “Nintendo 3DS Ambassador Program”, Nintendo released ten NES and ten GBA games free for the ambassadors to download exclusively.

Functions

The Nintendo eShop is displayed as an orange bag in the HOME menu of the Nintendo 3DS, as well as in the main and HOME menu of the Wii U and requires an internet connection.

In contrast to the Nintendo DSi Shop and Wii Shop Channel, in which you paid with Nintendo Points , you can pay in local currency for the first time in the Nintendo eShop; in Europe in euros or the respective national currency, in America with dollars and in Japan with yen .

Nintendo eShop registers the purchases so that a title can be downloaded again later. Nintendo eShop also offers the option of downloading software immediately, in standby mode or in the background. In standby mode, Nintendo 3DS will download the software through SpotPass .

Nintendo offers players who switch from the Nintendo DSi to the Nintendo 3DS the option of transferring their purchased software titles to the Nintendo 3DS. The software and all associated rights will be removed from the Nintendo DSi system and completely transferred to the Nintendo 3DS system except for the saved data. After that, it is no longer possible to play the titles on the Nintendo DSi, unless you buy the title again. A later update also offered this option for transferring between two Nintendo 3DS devices.

Content

The following content is available for download from the Nintendo eShop:

Download software

Games that have been specially developed for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U can be purchased from Nintendo eShop. Since the launch of Tank! Tank! Tank! (DL) for the Wii U are also offered free-to-play games in the Nintendo eShop.

DSi goods

Almost all Nintendo DSiWare titles are available in the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS. Like Nintendo DS titles, Nintendo DSiWare titles can be played in the original resolution, but there are black bars on the edges of the screen. You can also choose a variant in which the image is adapted to the larger screen of the 3DS, but the resolution suffers. The HOME menu functionality, i.e. pausing software for a short time by pressing the "HOME" button, is not supported.

DLC & patches

Downloadable content ( DLC ) is also offered in the Nintendo eShop . This means that the player has the option of adding additions such as B. download new maps, routes and other new content. In addition, software updates, so-called patches, are distributed via the Nintendo eShop , such as in mid-2012 for Mario Kart 7 to fix a bug (programming error) in some routes.

Virtual Console

Just like the Virtual Console of Nintendo Wii can be seen on the Nintendo 3DS and since February 2013, on the Wii U old classics from earlier systems such as Game Boy , Game Boy Color , or NES games.

3D classics

3D Classics are old video games that have been ported in 3D and graphically redesigned and improved. The first 3D Classic title was Excitebike , which was available for free download for a short time.

Full price games

Since August 17, 2012, full-price games have also been available in the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS. In addition, Nintendo rewarded purchases via the eShop with a "star bonus" in the in-house club Nintendo , before it was discontinued. No such bonus was credited to the purchase of full-price games in the Wii U eShop.

Demos

Since an update in December 2011, Nintendo has offered the option of downloading demo versions of a full-price title. However, there are limitations to the number of game starts available.

Videos & trailers

Videos and trailers for selected titles can be viewed in the Nintendo eShop on 3DS and Wii U. While these can be partially played in 3D on the Nintendo 3DS, video playback in the Wii U's eShop offers Full HD support. Nintendo also offers videos for download exclusively for Nintendo 3DS. The prices are usually between 0.99 euros and 1.50 euros.

Video services

In addition to numerous additional content such as videos, Nintendo also sells its own video services or those operated by cooperation partners in the eShop . In these, for example, game trailers, documentaries and other types, often in 3D, are available. The videos are uploaded wirelessly to the Nintendo 3DS via Spotpass and saved on the SD card.

Nintendo Video

In July 2011, Nintendo released its own service, Nintendo Video, for download. This offered the user game trailers, animated short films and documentaries that were available offline until they were replaced by new content. This service was officially discontinued on March 31, 2014.

Eurosport

In Europe, the sports broadcaster Eurosport has also been offering a video service since December 15, 2011, with which users could watch 3D sports videos. As with Nintendo Video, these were available offline for a certain period of time after (automatic) download and were then continuously replaced. The service has not been active since December 31, 2012.

Netflix

In North America, Netflix customers can also watch the full Netflix library on their Nintendo 3DS system, but only in 2D. However, Netflix plans to offer 3D movies as well.

Hulu Plus

Nintendo of America is also planning, through cooperation with the online service Hulu plus , to offer 3DS owners the opportunity to watch their TV series and films on their handhelds while on the move. A corresponding app has been available in the eShop since October 17, 2013.

YouTube

An adapted YouTube app has been available for the Wii U since its release . An application for Nintendo 3DS has been available for download free of charge from the European Nintendo 3DS eShop since November 29, 2013.
