itch.io is a website for offering, selling and downloading computer games and software . The site was launched by Leaf Corcoran in March 2013 and today (July 2017) offers more than 40,000 games. Most of them are indie games .

history

On March 3, 2013, Leaf Corcoran posted a blog post on leafo.net that gave detailed descriptions of what the website would look like. The “ Pay what you want ” model was particularly important in the implementation . In an interview with Rock, Paper, Shotgun , Corcoran said that the original idea was to offer a place where users could create their own websites about their games instead of online trading.

In June 2015 the website already offered more than 15,000 games and programs.

In December 2015, the release of a platform for desktop computers was announced to make it easier to install games and programs on the website. The "itch.io app" is available for Microsoft Windows , Linux and macOS .

In June 2020, after the violent death of the African American George Floyd , itch.io offered a collection of games, the proceeds of which were to be donated to two human rights organizations . 1,391 developers contributed games and other content to the Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality collection . The campaign raised over $ 8 million.

sale

The developers can either offer their games and programs for free or set a minimum amount of money to be paid. In both cases, users can also pay more if they enjoy the game. In May 2015, this raised a total of $ 51,489. In the standard setting, ten percent go to the website operator. However, the developer can freely choose the proportion and even reduce it to zero. This freedom of choice for developers and buyers makes the platform unique in the industry.
