Company history

Beginnings in publishing

The company was founded in 1918 by David Lloyd George as United Newspapers to acquire the Daily Chronicle and Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper . However, the origins of the companies that are part of UBM date back to the 18th century. UBM continues to publish titles that first appeared during this period, such as the Building and Chemist & Druggist magazines , which were started by Joseph Hansom in 1843. In 1929 the company merged with Provincial Newspapers, the owner of several regional newspapers in northern England. The following year the company sold its national newspapers. Over the next few decades the company operated as a publisher of regional newspapers and acquired other papers such as the 1969 Yorkshire Post Newspapers .

In 1982 PR Newswire acquired the company . In 1985, Express Newspapers, the publisher of the Daily Express newspaper, was taken over . In 1995 the company changed its name to United News & Media. In 1998 the regional newspaper was sold, and in 1999 CMP Media was taken over for 920 million US dollars. In 2000 the company sold Express Newspapers to Richard Desmond and renamed itself United Business Media. In 2006, Commonwealth Business Media took over for $ 152 million.

In 2008 UBM formally relocated its headquarters to Ireland for tax reasons , but announced its return to the UK in 2012 . In 2012, UBM's joint venture partner PA Group, parent company of the Press Association news agency , sold the company its 50% stake in Canada Newswire for £ 30.1 million.

TV holdings

MAI was part of a consortium bidding for the ITV network in the South and Southeast, which formed Meridian Broadcasting in 1991. Following the successful establishment of Meridian, MAI began to expand: In 1994, Anglia Television , the ITV franchise for the East of England, became the majority shareholder of the consortium that won the bid for Channel Five . In 1996 MAI merged with United Newspapers to form United News & Media (UNM) after a successful takeover. The company thus controlled the Daily Express , Meridian, Anglia and, via the Yorkshire Post, a large stake in Yorkshire Tyne Tees Television , the owners of Yorkshire Television and Tyne Tees Television . The stake in Yorkshire Tyne Tees Television was sold to Granada in 1997, which gained control of the two channels. United News and Media agreed later, the 20 -% - share of Scottish Television on TV station HTV to assume, on 28 June 1997 HTV British pound was eventually taken over completely by UNM for 370 million.

In 1999 there were talks about a merger between UNM and competitor Carlton , which were, however, unsuccessfully broken off when it became known that Meridian should have been sold as a condition for the merger. Instead, the UNM's TV offerings were sold to Granada. Due to antitrust regulations, according to which Granada should not have control over such a large audience share, the broadcasting division of HTV was sold to Carlton in exchange for Central's 20% stake in Meridian.

Reorganization since 2005

In 2005, UBM refocused on two main areas: PR Newswire, a global news provider, and CMP, an international event, print and online publishing provider. NOP was sold to GfK that same year for £ 383 million . In September 2006, NewBay Media acquired CMP Entertainment Media from United Business Media.

On July 1, 2008, United Business Media Limited (UBML) was set up as a new holding company as part of a reorganization of the group structure. UBML is registered in the UK and incorporated in Jersey .

In 2010 the holding was divided into five operational units: Events, TD&M, Data Services, Online and Print. In September 2010 Canon Communications announced that it had accepted a takeover offer by UBM. Also in 2010, UBM launched the marketing service provider DeusM, a company that focuses on setting up online communities for business-to-business retailers.

In May 2011 United Business Media officially changed its name to UBM plc.

In February 2012, the Yankee Group sold its annual 4G World trade fair to UBM plc and incorporated into the UBM Techweb division. Also in February 2012, Briefing Media acquired UBM's UK agriculture and general medicine portfolio for £ 10 million, while UBM announced the acquisition of four Asian trade shows for £ 19.4 million, highlighting UBM's ongoing transformation into an event host and B2B marketing service provider .
