Channel 5 is a British television station that first aired in 1997. It was owned by the RTL Group until 2010 and was then sold to the British media company Northern & Shell . In 2013 the market share was 4.0 percent. On May 1, 2014, the current owner agreed that Channel 5 would be sold to Viacom for £ 450 million (around € 567.4 million) . This has integrated the station into the Viacom International Media Networks group of companies - more precisely into the London-based operational unit Viacom International Media Networks for the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Russia and the Central and Eastern European countries .

reception

Channel 5 has been broadcasting on a terrestrial network since its inception and can be received across much of the UK. This chain was only put together in the 1990s from the last “frequency remnants” and therefore did not have the same range as the four older frequency chains on which BBC One , BBC Two , ITV 1 and Channel 4 broadcast. These residual frequencies were mostly in the range of the UHF channel 36, which was intended for the RF output of the video recorder in Western Europe at that time.Channel 5 had to ensure at its own expense that the channel of the video recorder was switched or through a filter, depending on the wishes of the person concerned Channel 5 reception has been made impossible. Coverage was poor in parts of southern England and Scotland, among other places. Analogue TV was discontinued in the UK between 2008 and 2012 and after the analogue shutdown, Channel 5 has achieved the same coverage as BBC One, Two, ITV 1 and Channel 4. Up to 99.4% of all households in Great Britain can receive Channel 5 via DVB-T . In addition, reception via cable and Astra 28.2 ° East is possible. In addition to the timeshift versions 5 +1 and 5 +24 , the station can also be received in HD. The start of the broadcast was accompanied by a massive advertising campaign with the Spice Girls . The station traditionally has the worst audience ratings of the five historic programs, but has been attracting a great deal of attention with this program since Channel 4's Big Brother format was adopted .

From the very beginning, Channel 5 broadcast with a so-called “ corner logo ”, that is, the transmitter identification that is common in Germany in a corner of the screen. Up until then, this was unusual in Great Britain and the biggest competitors did not introduce permanently displayed logos after viewer protests. In 2002 the fifth TV channel also did without a corner logo. The corner logo was reintroduced at the end of 2007.
