Corner logo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In a typical digital screen graphic, the television station logo is displayed in a corner of the screen.

As Corner Logo ( engl. Corner , corner ') is referred to for example in television , the channel logo in one of the four corners of the image. It is used to be able to see at a glance which program is involved. In English-speaking countries, the terms digital on-screen graphic (DOG), bug or watermark are more common.

Corner logos can also be used for poster advertising , websites, etc.

technology

The Corner Logo is generally only after the transmit mixer mixed in. There is a special logo generator for this, which is looped into the signal path. Semi-transparent corner logos - common in Germany - must also be "keyed". This means that the color of the corner logo changes slightly according to the pixels of the TV signal at the position. In the case of digital signal processing, this requires constant computing power from the logo generator.

In contrast to the transparent logo, there are also colored logos, which, however, attract more attention and can thus sometimes distract from the program (colored Sat.1 ball, current WDR logo). The RBB uses this property for the appearance of the corner logo during the station ID and trailer. Since August 18, 2012, these have been “ branded ” with a red corner logo , while the logo is displayed discreetly in white and transparent during the current program. Arte has also been using vertical lettering since 2017.

history

In the German-speaking countries, logos were only shown briefly in the 1980s to prevent video piracy of recordings. It was only when the first private broadcasters appeared (and these permanently faded in their logos) that the public broadcasters followed this trend . In German-speaking countries, the logos are usually displayed in the top right or top left. The best-known exceptions are the broadcasters RTL II and Tele 5 , which place their logos at the bottom right. Another special feature was Yavido Clips , which initially had its logo not in a corner, but in the middle above. The two news channels -N-tv and WORLD are the logos next to the news ticker placed Language bar.

In contrast to German-speaking channels, the BBC often broadcasts without a logo to this day, and the British ITV can only recognize the logo with great difficulty. However, most of the other British broadcasters have logos that are comparable to the German ones. A few pay TV channels such as Sky Cinema HD or Sky Atlantic HD do not display logos at all during a program, or only during the first few seconds of a program.

In the case of HDTV channels, most channels display an additional "HD" text.
