The casein soy peptone agar is a nutrient medium for cultivating microorganisms .

The Ca Being So yes peptone agar or casein soya meal peptone agar can be found in the literature as CASO abbreviated. The variant as a liquid nutrient medium (without the addition of a gelling agent ), for example the casein-soy-peptone broth , is abbreviated as CASO . The culture medium is referred to in the English literature as Tryptic Soy Agar (TSA) or Soybean Casein Digest Agar (CSA), in the German literature tryptic soy agar is mostly used for this . The medium consists essentially of casein - peptone and soy flour peptone. The proteins are broken down with trypsin , the peptones obtained in this way are then also referred to as tryptones.

A large number of fastidious bacteria grow in or on this medium. Therefore it is a standard medium for the detection of bacteria, but is also used for the detection of molds and yeasts . The cultivation of the microorganisms can take place either under aerobic or under anaerobic conditions. Typical areas of application are (waste) water analysis and cosmetics. In some mixtures, cycloheximide is added to inhibit yeast.

The medium is standardized in both the European and American Pharmacopoeia .
