Richard Desmond (born December 8, 1951 in Edgware , London ) is a British publisher . He is the founder of the Northern & Shell Group and owner of Express Newspapers , which publish the Daily Express , Sunday Express and Daily Star newspapers .

Life

Richard Desmond initially published pornographic magazines and took over Express Newspapers in 2000 with the help of a loan from Commerzbank AG . The takeover of power at the newspaper went hand in hand with a political change in the orientation of the newspaper in favor of the Labor Party . A competition law review by the Labor government did not take place. Desmond then donated £ 100,000 to the Labor Party, which sparked controversy. Some prominent Labor members, including Clare Short , then asked whether the party should accept money from a porn newspaper publisher.

In March 2004 Desmond sold its 45 porn magazines for £ 20 million. In April 2004, the Jewish Desmond achieved dubious fame when, after just two weeks, he changed the orientation of his newspaper again, compared all Germans with Nazis at a meeting , imitated Adolf Hitler and presented the Hitler salute. He then ordered his employees to sing the first verse of the German national anthem. The reason for this outbreak is suspected to be the failed takeover of the Daily Telegraph newspaper by Desmond, in which the German Axel Springer publishing house also took part.
