Super Smash Bros. ( Japanese : 大乱 闘 ス マ ッ シ ュ ブ ラ ザ ー ズ, Hepburn : Dai Rantō Sumasshu Burazāzu, unofficially often abbreviated as Smash Bros. or SSB ) is a video game series from Nintendo in which the company's most popular characters come together . In the third part of the series, two characters from other companies ( Konami , Sega ) were also added. These are fighting games in which the aim of the game is to use a chosen character to push your opponent from a platform with the help of individual attacks and random items . The series is created by Masahiro Sakurai .

The event is presented in a stylized and comic-like manner. In the multiplayer mode (depending on the game) up to eight players can fight with or against each other.

Game mechanics

The game system is two-dimensional : the players the action from the side and can their figures upwards, move down the left and to the right, as in 2D - platformers runs .

In contrast to most fighting games , the competition does not consist in knocking out the opponent with successful attacks ; rather, the player has to keep his own pawn on a floating platform for as long as possible and knock other pawns out of the picture in any direction. For this, each opponent must first be weakened with suitable attacks. With each hit inserted, a percentage display assigned to the figure increases. The higher this “damage indicator” is, the further the figure will be thrown back by attacks and the more difficult it will be for it to get back onto the platform. To counteract this, the characters usually have a second jump at their disposal, which they can start freely in the air, as well as special attacks with which they can cover additional distances in the air.

The Smash Bros control system is also very different from that of other fighting games such as Street Fighter : Instead of predefined input combinations, only a dedicated button and possibly a direction input via the analog stick are required to carry out a special attack . There are also not several buttons for blows or kicks of different strength and speed, instead a single button is used, which causes different attacks depending on the movement and position of the analog stick.

In addition to the peculiar attacks of each character, items are also available to the players . These appear randomly on the battle arena and can be picked up by the characters. Like the game characters and combat areas, these items are also borrowed from well-known Nintendo game series. Examples of this are the fire flower from the Super Mario games, which functions as a flamethrower, or the huge hammer known from Donkey Kong .

Some items immediately put the wearer into a temporary state, for example invulnerability, or partially reset the damage indicator, while others function as a blank , projectile or thrown weapon . In general, edged weapons and projectile weapons can also be misused as thrown weapons at any time. Some objects are containers that, when thrown, reveal additional items. Are a specific type within this Poké Balls and Assist Trophies: This type Pokémon or a non-playable character, which usually attack other players in the short term.

The peculiarities of some arenas contribute to the game; In addition to the main platform, there are some smaller platforms that can either temporarily disappear or move.

Games

Super Smash Bros.

With Super Smash Bros. , the first part of the Super Smash Bros. series was released on November 19, 1999 on the Nintendo 64 and was particularly popular in Japan. The game is shown in 3D computer graphics . It was developed by HAL Laboratory under the direction of Masahiro Sakurai and published by Nintendo . Super Smash Bros. contains 12 playable characters, four of which must be unlocked in the course of the game, and nine playable arenas. The game contains both a single player mode in which the player fights various computer-controlled characters in a fixed order, as well as a multiplayer mode in which several players can compete against each other.

The game was generally rated well by critics. The US game magazine IGN named Super Smash Bros. 11th in its list of the 25 best N64 games.

Super Smash Bros. was released in Europe on June 12, 2009 for the Virtual Console on the Wii Shop Channel. The publication for North America followed on December 21 of the same year.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

The successor Super Smash Bros. Melee was released at the end of 2001 in Japan and North America and in May 2002 in Europe for the Nintendo GameCube (NGC) and comes with numerous innovations, including some additional game modes for single and multiplayer functions, other arenas and Characters as well as numerous other additions and improvements that significantly increase the scope of the successor. A large part of the game (characters, arenas) only opens up after certain hurdles have been overcome, such as exiting a game mode within a certain time. Like its predecessor, Melee was developed by HAL Laboratory under the direction of Masahiro Sakurai .

Super Smash Bros. Melee is the best-selling video game for the GameCube with 7 million copies sold worldwide. For many fans of the series, Melee is still considered the best part of the series due to the great depth of play and the high speed and is therefore often played by e-athletes .

The Wii title Super Smash Bros. Brawl (SSBB, 大乱 闘 ス マ ッ シ ュ ブ ラ ザ ー ズ X Dairantō Sumasshu Burazāzu Ekusu for "Riesenrauferei Smash Brothers X") appeared in Japan on January 31, 2008 as the first Wii game on a double-coated DVD-ROM. It sold over a million copies in two weeks in Japan and 1.4 million copies in eight days in the United States, where the game was the fastest selling game to date, with 874,000 sales on the first day of sales, March 9, 2008 Game for Nintendo was made. Sales for the European area began on June 27, 2008. The game was released on February 20, 2008 by the entertainment software self-regulation from 12 years of age.

Game series already represented, such as Donkey Kong or Kirby , have been expanded to include additional characters and newer series are represented by characters such as Wario or Olimar , the protagonists of the Pikmin games. One of the new characters, ROB , does not come from a game, but is an accessory for the NES . As a novelty in Smash Bros games well-known characters from Nintendo's independent studios are playable: Konami's Snake , the protagonist of Metal Gear series, and Sega - mascot Sonic . Some of the characters have to be unlocked again under different conditions, after which 35 characters are available to choose from.

As with its predecessors, you can play this game with up to three other players. As the first game in the series, Brawl also supports an online multiplayer mode with two connection types:

  • The player connects with friends, whose names he has in a personal list, and you can send messages that you have defined yourself beforehand.
  • The player is randomly connected to other players and can then neither see their names nor send them messages. These fights are limited to the "one-on-one" and "two-on-two" modes.

Other options for using the online function include sending your own battle arenas, screenshots and video recordings.

The game supports four control modes:

  • The Wii Remote is held horizontally with both hands like a gamepad.
  • The Wii Remote is used with a connected Nunchuk Extension.
  • The Classic-Controller / Pro is supported.
  • In addition, the game can be played with the GameCube controllers connected to the Wii console .

For each of these control options you can freely change the key assignment and save it under a player profile. This profile can be loaded in the character selection before a game round.

One of the biggest technical innovations in Brawl is the ultra-smash attack, a potent attack that can be carried out using a special item, the smash ball . The Smash Ball appears at varying intervals during a fight and flies in random paths across the screen and disappears as soon as it has received a certain number of attacks. The character who carried out the last attack on the Smash Ball is now able to use its individual Ultra Smash once.

The developers made an effort with the acoustic background music for the fighting game. For each battle arena there are several pieces of music available, which can be listened to in a sound menu as a rehearsal, in order to then determine the probability with which a song will be played in the respective level. The music tracks come from games from all generations of Nintendo consoles , starting with the Nintendo Entertainment System . In addition, Nintendo internal and external composers such as Koji Kondo and Yuzo Koshiro each create an arrangement of a well-known Nintendo melody of their choice. The theme music was composed by Nobuo Uematsu .

It was also difficult for Nintendo to release the game on a single-layer Wii disc , which is why they decided to release this game on a dual-layer disc . Nintendo confirmed during the release period that older Wii models could have problems reading the disc, which resulted in an offer of repair and a lens cleaning kit being offered afterwards. Although Nintendo used the conventional single-layer disc again for other games that appeared after Super Smash Bros. Brawl , it has also opted for the dual- layer disc for games such as Metroid Other M, Xenoblade Chronicles or The Last Story . Disc decided.

Mods

Flaws in Brawl's programming while loading player-created stages allow hackers to modify the game. One result of this is unauthorized variants of Brawl that change the gaming experience with different goals. Changes that go beyond purely graphic aspects such as additional character costumes and indicators for more effective e-sports training are mainly to enable a fairer game, ranging from changed parameters, switching off unwanted and sometimes random mechanics to completely revised movesets .

Well-known mods from Brawl include:

  • Brawl + , one of the first successful mods with the aim of reducing bad matchups mainly by reducing strengths.
  • Brawl− , as a parody of Brawl + with a similar aim of reducing bad matchups through sometimes enormous reinforcements.
  • Project M (the M unofficially stands for Melee ), with similar goals as Brawl + , but also to bring the gaming experience closer to that of Melee . On December 1, 2015, the development team announced that they would discontinue further development due to legal concerns.
  • Legacy versions of Project M , which, depending on the version, try to meet the demands of casual and tournament players.

At times, Project M was a discipline in international fighting game tournaments like Evo and CEO, which do not focus or limit themselves to games from the Super Smash Bros. series.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U

At a Nintendo Direct conference on June 21, 2012, Nintendo announced that Bandai Namco Games and Namco Bandai Studios would support Nintendo in the development of the fourth Super Smash Bros. This was justified with the effort to produce two different games at the same time and to publish these games relatively promptly. Masahiro Sakurai from Project Sora is the lead on the project while Masaya Kobayashi from Namco Bandai is the producer. Yoshito Higuchi, who z. B. was involved in Tales of Vesperia , is appointed as Director. Namco Bandai already has experience in the fighting game genre and will provide their best developers for this project, such as: B. the development team behind the Tekken series and some developers of the Soul Calibur series.
It is possible to personalize individual characters with different items and then swap the characters between the two game versions. An interaction between the Wii-U and Nintendo 3DS versions is possible by using the 3DS as a controller for the Wii-U version. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS was released in Europe on October 3rd, 2014 (due to public holidays in Germany already on October 2nd), Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on November 28th. Since this part it is possible to use Amiibo from the Super Smash Bros series.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

The Nintendo Switch title Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the fifth installment in the Super Smash Bros. series. At the Nintendo Direct presentation on March 8, 2018, it was announced that another Super Smash Bros. title is in development for the Nintendo Switch. At E3 2018, the name Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was announced and the release date was set to December 7th, 2018.

Ultimate contains 74 playable fighters at the time of publication, each one from the previous titles and 11 newcomers. 5 more DLC fighters have also been released in Fighters Pass 1 and 6 more DLC fighters are to follow in Fighters Pass Vol. 2. Nintendo of Japan has confirmed via Twitter that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate runs in TV mode in 1080p at 60 fps and in handheld mode at 720p at 60 fps as well. It is also possible to play the game with a GameCube controller and a suitable adapter on the Nintendo Switch.
